Shutdown takes forever (XP SP2)

Hi,

I am having problems with my xp Sp2 PC. Recently when trying to shutdown the PC I have to wait extended periods of time for it to complete. This is becoming very painful when I try and install some new software as it takes forever to reboot.

Everything unloads at about the normal pace until I get to the "Windows" is shutting down..." screen. Once I hit this screen I ihave to wait a minimum of 5 minutes to finally turn off.

Is there anywhere I can look to try and fix this - As i said, it is a very painful wait...

Since you said "recently," it begs the question what new hardware or software have you added to your mix that might need to be looked at? It sounds like something (hardware or software) is not cooperating with Windows' request for it to shutdown. How about a look in Task Manager at running processes to see if something can be spotted? After you take a look, you could post a screenshot of the list for us to look at as well.

You will be able to spend many happy hours with the results from Googling for XP slow shutdown . Beware that your will have to filter out stuff which may no longer be relevant to SP2...

Al's "effect and cause" suggestion is probably the best.

Potentially not that "recently" I very rarely shut down my PC and I did so because I felt it was starting to slow down.. THis is when I started noticing it. I'll try and grab a screen shot of the windows Task Manager next time I shut down.

Thanks

Here is a shot of my task manager with no applications running (only services and auto start programs)

Just shut down again and it got through the usual shutdown process and got to the "Windows is shutting down" screen and it tool 4:42 to completely shut down.

Obviously there's a lot of elements in your list that I'm not familiar with and don't have running on my system. You ought to first check out the link Joe provided to see if you spot anything worth pursuing. I looked at the list of articles and don't see any titles that exactly match your situation, i.e. your machine isn't really "hung" as it does eventually shut down. But maybe there's something close enough to check.

Otherwise, you may be in for some trial and error work. For example, I think for starters I would stop the four Google entries while in the Task Mgr screen and then try to shut down. If that doesn't do it, they should be re-started when you boot. Then, I guess it's time to try another one or two. Maybe someone here will spot something they're familiar with in your list. Hang in there...

A few suggestions.1) Are you are syncing your Nokia phone and MSMessenger? Are you doing it daily? If not then stop these programs from autostarting and set them to start when you use them. This could be an issue. 2) Change to Free Download Manager from Star Downloader and have it not start when your computer starts (link its start to the start of your browser). 3) Shut off auto update for Realplayer in preferences 4) If you do not use MSMessenger, uninstall it from Windows components in Add/Remove in the control panel If you do IM then try using Trillion and disable MSMessenger 5) Check for new drivers for your wheel mouse 6) Check that everything is working well with your ZoneAlarm 7) It appears you have a real Google addiction, try Firefox with tabbed browsing and built-in search instead. 8) Uncheck the box for auto updates for your java (from the applet in the control panel) Just a little food for thought. I also attached another view of running processes from a laptop with a different firewall, antispam, antivirus, etc.

Re: Shutdown takes forever (XP SP2)

Hi Shannon:
One thing you might do is get a utility like EndItAll2. This utility will try to close everything except Explorer & try to kill processes that it can't close. I use it when I want to install software or when I want to use minimal resources except games. However, you can also use it on individual processes to see how hard it is to close or kill. That way, you may find out what the problem is. Unfortunately, the PC Magazine utilities are no longer free, but I think an individual one costs about $5 & a year subscription (unlimited downloads) is $20. Alternatively, you could close each process in turn until your machine freezes . In the meantime, I've posted a screenshot of what can be closed or killed & what is protected on my machine. On the left a lock shows processes that shouldn't be killed or closed, so this may help somewhat.
Cheers,

Re: Shutdown takes forever (XP SP2)

I think you are lucky - only 4 mins 42 seconds. I have exactly the same problem with a computer I have made no hardware or software changes to and it takes 8 mins30 secs on the "
Windows is Shutting Down" screen. I find that if you pull the power after a minute into this phase, Windows reboots normally. I have re-installed Windows with a spare old hard disc and it all works fine. So that rules out a hardware problem. Clearly this is one of those bugs they will silently fix one day and no one will ever know what the real problem was - or does someone?

In my case the problem occurs after windows eventlog service has stopped. Surely there is some other log file kept somewhere that will tell you what the offending driver or application is that is timing-out the system? I'm sure it is a time-out situation of some sort after some process just won't realease.

Hi David

I had a very slow shutdown problem that started when I updated to SP2. Take a look at my <post:=623,432>post 623,432</post:> and see if any of this helps you. I would definitely set a restore point or make a backup of the computer however before doing anything radical! Good luck!

Thanks for your kind reply; I had already discovered that page and tried all the recommendations on it that seemed to apply under the REAL SLOW section but nothing makes any difference.
I just keep plugging away I guess. But wouldn't you think that there would be some log of the shutdown process that is kept after the eventlog service terminates so you could analyse the
cause the the problem?

Re: Shutdown takes forever (XP SP2)

Hi David!

I've not seen any type of log that is created as the computer shuts down. The event viewer may give a clue about what might be holding the shutdown process up but in my case it didn't help. I tried all sorts of hints with no success until I hit on shutting down the Terminal service. It was something I hadn't tried before since I had gone through turning off services one by one once without success toward proving which one was causing my problem. But I also knew it had to be a service holding out because I could start up in safe mode and shutdown 'zippidity' quick from safe mode. It was simply a matter deciding which one. As it turns out, it was a collection of them since Terminal service governs Remote Assistance, Fast User Switching or Remote Desktop. It took more than a year to reach this success point! So keep at it and maybe you'll find the offending process one of these days!
