    Laptop in different LANs

    Hello everybody!

I have a question concerning my laptop working in different LANs. One LAN is working with a DHCP-server, the others are not, so I need a static IP-adress there. My laptop has one network-card. As a matter of fact, I have to reconfigure my network-card in dependency of the LAN I am working with. Now I am wondering whether it is possible to find out about the actual LAN during the boot-process and then configure the network-card automatically for the detected LAN.
Is something like this possible? If so, does anybody have a suggestion how this could be done?

    Any help will be appreciated.

    Best regards, Porley

The easiest way to configure this on Windows XP Professional is in the TCP/IP properties of your network adapter, go to the Alternate Configuration tab and change it from "Automatic private IP address" to the static address you want used when no DHCP server is available.

I don't know if the same setting is available on Windows XP Home

    Hello Stuart!

Thanks for your assistance. I already have tried this. It works, but unfortunately very slowly. Logging on makes me wait for more than two minutes (usually is works within about 20 seconds). Also, I have more than two LAN configurations, which means I would need more than one alternative ;-(
I am working with Windows XP Professional, if this information is helpful for any other suggestions.

Have you looked at tools like NetSwitcher?

I don't know of any decent free tools that do this job. If you don't get a response here within a day or so then you may want to post that specific question in the Software Finds and Wants forum.
