    Lounge slow to paste

Edited by HansV to crop overly wide screenshot. Please stay within 640x480.

(I learned as I wrote this, so what follows is a monologue of exploration)

It may well be my machine (later: turns out it was, but I'm still puzzled), but I have doubts, hence this post

I'm searching for clues, find a good post, and decide to paste the post into a WordXP document. I select (image below) the post from the signature line ("Jefferson Scher ... IMPORTANT: check online for corrections") up to and including the identity (" (Moderator WMVP) 02-Sep-03 15:55"), and including the hyperlink to "jscher2000" and his ribbon.

With all this reference material from one post selected, I choose Edit, Copy, Alt-Tab to Word, choose Edit Paste, and wait a full two minutes for WordXP to display the copied material.

If instead I fire up Notepad, the text is pasted instanter. No graphics or hyperlinks, of course.

To search for the post, by text or by message number, brings up the material in FireFox in a matter of seconds. I reason that this is not a case of 'the lounge is slow today"; it's fast.
To paste into Notepad is fast.

It must be something to do with the way WordXP solicits each hyperlink or graphic component of the post from the Lounge, no?
That makes me wonder if ExcelXP is as slow.
It isn't, but more importantly, ZoneAlarm pops up and asks if Excel should be allowed to access the Internet. I say "Yes" and my stuff is pasted, fast.

Ooops. I installed ZoneAlarm last week and got suspicious of Word "secretly" accessing the internet - I didn't know it did that periodically, so inhibited its access.

So now I give Word free reign, and waddyaknow, pasting is fast again.

But I'm still puzzled. I had expected that a Ctrl-C in the browser would copy material to the clipboard on my beige box. Why should Word wander off to the internet when the material is on the clipboard? And if ZoneAlarm truly is blocking Word's access, why isn't it blocked? Why, instead, is it slowed down to two minutes, rather like a link of striking pickets at a warehouse?

    Re: Lounge slow to paste

How the Windows clipboard works is a bit mysterious to me (since I haven't dug into MS' documentation). Just looking at the variations in Word's Edit>Paste Special dialog arising from different data sources, it is clear that the clipboard maintains a fairly complex representation of the copied data. The notion that an application might prefer to return to the source for some or all of it isn't completely absurd, although it can be inefficient as in this case.

    Jefferson, thanks for the insight.
I later found that even with ZoneAlarm's four green ticks alongside Word, it drags to the point of making me want to reboot - which I did, once.
Amazing (to me) is the knowledge that Excel is blindingly fast by comparison.

P.S. Is this the first time in Lounge history that we have had two photos side-by-side, almost, of the same member, one shot at midnight, one at sunset?

    Re: Lounge slow to paste

On my Office 2003/ XP OS machine, pasting of HTML is very slow from an HTML formatted Outlook Message, or IE browser text, to either a non-HTML Outlook message or Word. I haven't studied what other applications experience the delay. Jefferson already hinted at this, but I get around it by using Edit | Paste Special | Unformatted Text. When I remember to. And don't ask me to explain what the problem is or why the workaround helps. I have no idea. It may have to do with Unicode translation, but that is wild-eyed speculation on my part.

Plan C might be to use the Lounge's <IMG SRC=http://www.wopr.com/w3timages/print.gif> (Save/Print Post) button to call up a skinless version of the post, and print to PDF for safekeeping. <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

John, thanks for this sugegstion. It is fast.
Emboldened I tried all three Paste Special options available to me (1) Unformatted text (2) HTML text and (3) Unformatted UniCode text.
All three fast enough (2 seconds?)

Then I tried plain old Ctrl-V again.
To my surprise it took about 2 seconds rather than 2 minutes.
I wonder now whether I had some gremlin running around this morning on my machine.

Thanks Jeffesron, it's worth a try, although -- six hours later the problem seems to be in abeyance at my end. I had previously found that pasting via NotePad.exe was fast enough, albeit a two-step process.

Chris, the next time you find pasting to be slow, my recommendation is that you use a pneumatic nail gun. That way you don't have to wait for the paste to dry. <img src=/S/evilgrin.gif border=0 alt=evilgrin width=15 height=15>

I can think of several things related to Microsoft to which I'd like to take a nail gun; a chunk of linked graphics is one of them not!

    Re: Lounge slow to paste

When you paste into an office application, all the formatting information is copied as well, bloating your document. Assuming you're only interested in the text of a post, proceed as follows (much faster than going through the special copying selections):

<UL><LI>Copy your text off the web selecting the text and pressing (Ctrl-C).<LI>Start up Notepad (which does not support formatting)<LI>Paste into Notepad (Ctrl-V)<LI>Select all text in Notepad and copy it again (Ctrl-A,Ctrl-C)<LI>Paste into office application. (Ctrl-V)[/list]Problem solved <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

It's quite possible that your faster copying data could have been coming out of your cache rather than the net, or maybe Zonealarm just gave up and let it through <img src=/S/laugh.gif border=0 alt=laugh width=15 height=15>
    Cheers, Claude.

Thanks Claude. This was my ultimate method. In this example I wanted to harvest all the text, because I reckoned that someone would wonder if I'd found THEIR post, and a quick search of the attached document would let them know.

    >coming out of your cache
I suppose this is not a good time to ask if the lounge could revert to a DOS-based BBS system? (grin!)
