    defrag question (xp home)

Trying to run DEFRAG on my daughter's system. The defrag process "stalls" once it gets to "moving file _REGISTRY_MACHINE_SOFTWARE" . I have stopped DEFRAG and restarted but it "stalls" at the same point. Then I went into SAFE MODE and ran into the same problem.

    Any suggestions?

    Hi

Have you disabled any Antivirus Progam? This stalls defrag on machines i have dealt with in the past.

Finally just let DEFRAG sit there and after about 2 hours, it got past the file and finished. Hard to say why stuff like this happens.

    Thanks anyhoo.

    Re: defrag question (xp home)

I suppose such a staggeringly-long defrag time is possible if it's been a very long time since the previous defrag, and lots of software (SP1? SP2? packages?) has been installed since then. The Registry files are fairly large, but even my Software one is only 21 MB!

PS It would be interesting to see if another defrag takes the usual length of time now...

    Re: defrag question (xp home)

Yes it had been a LOOONGGGG time since my daughter had defraged her system. Since getting through the initial defrag, it now takes the normal time to do a defrag. She also had about 1/2 GB of temporary internet files which I deleted. Her system seems to be working fine now.

You will have to encourage her to do this every couple of weeks, or so. It can assist in preventing unexplained sloth...
