Files not locked when in use (Office 2002 SP3)

Several users open the same excel documents at the same time, and they do not get the "file is locked for editing" message. But it's sporadic...sometimes they do get the message. Anyone have any ideas why this could be happening? They both make changes and overwrite each other, which is causing problems. Thanks.

Have some of the workbooks been saved as shared workbooks? You can check this in Tools | Share Workbook... If they have, multiple users can open such a workbook, and depending on the settings in the Advanced tab of Tools | Share Workbook..., changes may be saved automatically.

Are the network connections different between these "several people" or are they all in exactly the same office area with exactly the same server connections?

My instinct is that this is more likely to be a network/server connection problem than an Excel problem, but first more facts could well be helpful.

Thanks. None of the files are shared. All users have identical PC and network setups. Same office/network segment, etc.

I would take this up with your network administrator. Normally, Excel locks a file the moment it is opened by a user; perhaps your network has settings that negate this.

Unfortunately, I am the network administrator. We have no settings that would be causing this. Most Excel files are locked correctly when opened. It's only a handful that are doing this.

Are you certain the files that are being opened are the same ones?

Users don't always know where the files they open are located. I could see people opening local copies and just thinking they are the network copies...

It seems somewhat unlikely, but perhaps the files in question have started to become corrupted. Can you try saving them into HTML format and then resaving them into default format - to see if that makesanay difference? HTH
