Merge Field Text Size Limit? (2000)

When I add new records to a data source, by clicking on Edit Data Source, Word seems to be limiting me to adding 45 characters and no more. When I type in the comments (this is a field for comments) text scrolls as I type, but then stops at 45 characters. I'd like to keep the "form interface" for data entry, because a non-experienced computer will be doing data entry. The form Word provides is cleaner and more friendly than asking for data entry directly in the underlying source table.
What's going on with limiting the number of text characters?
    Thanks in advance.

In what format is your Data Source stored - an Access table? If that's the case, Word doesn't really have any knowledge of the field properties in Access. If you aren't using Access give us more details - otherwise I would suggest you consider editing the data in an Access form.
