Problem Opening Folders (XP Pro SP2 all updates)

I just started experiencing a problem with the folders on my system. It seems to have begun after I tried a tip I read in PC World about how to add a "New Folder" item to the right-click menu. The tip appeared to work as advertised and I went about my business. However, the next time I double clicked on a folder on my desktop the Search window opened. This occurs with every folder on the system, everytime. There are no removal instructions for this tip, just a Regedit, which I did, to no avail. If I right-click and select Open from the context menu, the folder opens normally. I was going to try a system restore to yesterday but I have only System Checkpoints for yesterday and the day before. Any thoughts ??

    Doc,

Check out 'Folders Open Search Windows' at F Page - Windows XP from A to Z. Kelly Theriot's terrific site.

If Joe's suggestion doesn't work, you could post the REG file (if such it was) which did the original task, and someone who hasn't run it (e.g. me) can tell you what they have in their Registry for the corresponding key(s) and value(s), so you can revert to the previous state!

    John,

Most kind of you to offer yourself up like that to be experimented upon. <img src=/S/laugh.gif border=0 alt=laugh width=15 height=15> I'd already been to the registry and removed what I had added but I'll share the hack with you to prevent some other poor soul from going through this frustration.

I'm going to put it in another post. I can't seem to get it to paste into this one without getting extra text.

Make a New Folder command to your right-click, or context, menu. This saves you the trouble of navigating to the File menu's often slow New submenu. To create a new context menu item, open an Explorer window and choose Tools, Folder Options. Click the File Types tab, and in the 'Registered file types' list, select File Folder and click Advanced to open the Edit File Type dialog box. Now click the New button. For 'Action', type the words that you want to appear on your context menu (such as New Folder). For 'Application used to perform action', type cmd.exe /c md "%1New Folder" (in Windows 2000 and XP).
Click OK and then close the remaining dialog boxes. Now when you right-click a folder icon, your New Folder command will be available without your having to navigate through the New submenu.
If you make a mistake in Windows 2000, Me, or XP, you'll have to alter the command via the Registry Editor, or delete it and start over.

To trim items from the right-click menu for folders, navigate the tree diagram on the left to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTDirectoryshell.

Re: Problem Opening Folders (XP Pro SP2 all update

    Doc,

I tried your approach and it "worked". Perhaps a few words of caution from my experience:
    1. Installing your cmd.exe line went fine. But I too had the Search window open when double clicking. So Kelley's first tip worked.
    2. When using the right click "New Folder", a command window flashes as cmd is doing it's job. This can be somewhat disconcerting if one didn't expect it.
    3. If using this on an existing folder, the folder window doesn't open. So you have to open it to rename the folder (see #4b below).
    4. If using this in a Win Explorer window on the left pane, there are 2 diffs from "normal" Explorer behavior using the File | New menu:
--a. the right pane doesn't scroll to the bottom so you can instantly rename the new folder; you don't even know it's there if your right pane is long enough to require vert scrolling - see 4b
--b. if you try creating a 2nd New Folder while the first one is still named "New Folder", it seems to do nothing - as opposed to the "normal" behavior of created "New Folder (2)"

    At least that's my experience.

In all the Windows classes I teach, I always say MS missed the boat on not allowing a New Folder item on the right click of an existing folder. Since these are beginner classes, I definitely won't talk about this. But given some of the things above, I'm not sure I'm very happy with it either.

Re: Problem Opening Folders (XP Pro SP2 all update

    Fred,

I agree, this is a flawed tip. It does what it says it will do, but also has so many side effects and caveats as to make it useless and possibly harmful to an inexperienced user. I too saw the command window flash by and was not pleased. After I cleaned up after myself with this little mess, I found a New Folder in one of the folders I was "testing" the new function on. I didn't know it was there and surmise that it may have been the cause of the Search window opening when I tried to use the function a second time. It seems Windows will not allow a second alliteration of "New Folder" and this tip doesn't create a second folder with a numerical add-on like New Folder(2).

All in all, this is one tip that should be forgotten. But I agree that the function is something MS should get behind and create as part of the OS.

I believe that was Joe's referral to Kelly's Korner. But since he doesn't seem to be here at the moment.... You're welcome. <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>
