    Shareware Unlocking Registration Number (2003)

How can a shareware unlocking registration number be implemented in an Access 2003 project? I'm thinking of a limited version of the program being offered for free. Upon registration (and payment!!), the user is e-mailed an unlocking code. This can be used to restore full functionality.

I've always been curious how these things work, particularly when the unlocking code includes letters and numbers. Do the ASCII values of the registration number have to add up to some specific number? HOw can it be made relatively secure so it can't be discovered easily?

    Thanks in advance. <img src=/S/clapping.gif border=0 alt=clapping width=19 height=23>

There are all sorts of issues with such schemes - for example you really want each user to have a unique unlocking code, as otherwise users will be able to deploy it without limit once the unlocking code is obtained. And it becomes pretty difficult to hide that sort of thing in Access - you can secure a database somewhat, but password crackers abound, so that's a challenge. We are using a commercial security tool with the product that we are about to begin selling because of those issues.

    Wendell,
What is the commercial security tool and how much did it cost?
Good luck with the release. Can we get some details of your product?
