    cannot Open Web (2000/SR-1 (?))

Windows XP Professional SP2, FrontPage 2000

I, the Administrator of this particular computer, used regedit to modify the location of Common Files so all of the programs located on the F: partition could, uh, get along.

Whenever I try to open a web in MS FrontPage 2000 I receive the following error:
Cannot load "C:Program FilesCommon FilesMicrosoft SharedWeb Server Extensions40binfp4Awel.dll

I began to follow the instructions here and discovered that the file in question [fp4Awel.dll] is in the F: partition; in other words, I need to find a way to get FP 2000 to look at F: and not C:

    Any clues?

I assume you've searched the registry for that path or relevant portions thereof.

MS may have supplied server-side code files that presume the location of some executable files. You might try a text search for the DLL name in your web, making sure to check files with unusual extensions like global.asa (if you have ASP files).

When does the error happen - 1)when launching FP or 2)opening that specific web?
If number 2 have you tried creating a "dummy" web and does it have the same problem.

I assume you've searched the registry for that path or relevant portions thereof.
I have now and saw that the specific location of the DLL file appeared in two places. I modified those two places, started FP 2000, and saw Windows Installer kick in. FP 2000 loaded okay (as usual), but the same error message appeared when I tried to open the index.htm file of the previously created web.

I went back to regedit and saw that Windows Installer must have 'changed' my modifications back to F: (I had previously modified Common Files to be pointed to the F: programs partition.)

It seems that if I "created" two registry keys to point to C: (where FrontPage wants to look) that I could open the web to be edited/updated; however, I'm 404 in that area.

MS may have supplied server-side code files that presume the location of some executable files. You might try a text search for the DLL name in your web, making sure to check files with unusual extensions like global.asa (if you have ASP files). I'm not sure I understand what you're asking me to do.

I tried that after your suggestion but go the same error.

    What do we try next?

Regarding the Registry, I think it would be a mistake to try too hard to fool the Installer unless one works with it regularly (i.e., a developer who knows where and how information is stashed).

My suggestion regarding the web was to use Windows Explorer's search option to search for the name of the DLL as a text string all files in the web, just as you would search any other folder.

Have you tried unistalling and reinstalling the server extensions?

    Okay, count me out <g>.

I think it's the part "as a text string all files in the web" that I don't understand. I can search for the said DLL file by name, but then... (?)

Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling the server extensions?
How would I do that exactly?

I sure do appreciate your willingness to help! Won't it be great when we solve this challenge?

Regarding Windows Explorer's search pane, you can search in the file name or you can search in documents themselves. Try putting the full name of that DLL in the second box, point it at the relevant folders, and see if any contain that DLL name.

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?...kb;en-us;300004 has the instructions - though it looks like you'll actually have to install fp 2002 server extensions.

Hmm, I've searched for it in the top box but never in the other box. The file came up but in the F: partition where I have the Program Files.

    I'm still here:
<hr>Whenever I try to open a web in MS FrontPage 2000 I receive the following error:
Cannot load "C:Program FilesCommon FilesMicrosoft SharedWeb Server Extensions40binfp4Awel.dll

I began to follow the instructions here and discovered that the file in question [fp4Awel.dll] is in the F: partition; in other words, I need to find a way to get FP 2000 to look at F: and not C:<hr>

... has the instructions - though it looks like you'll actually have to install fp 2002 server extensions.
    Thanks for digging that up!
I guess that sorta begs the question as to why that must be done. Pragmatically, however, all should be well. I'll give it a try to see what happens.

Re: cannot Open Web (2000/SR-1 (?))

Well, I tried that Microsoft page with instructions to solve my challenge, downloaded what I thought were the FP 2002 Server Extensions, and began to run the file only to receive an error message that I had to have Microsoft Internet Information Server 4.0 or greater.

    <img src=/S/confused3.gif border=0 alt=confused3 width=45 height=45>

So, no, this didn't help me solve what I'd like to think is an easy dilemma.

    So what will it take?

Do you have this path Program FilesCommon FilesMicrosoft SharedWeb Server Extensions on your F: drive? What other files share space with your <font color=red>fp4Awel.dll</font color=red>?

    Yes

What other files share space with your fp4Awel.dll?
All of my Program Files are on that partition.

I'm wondering if the server extensions file for the previous (2000) may already be in the same directory as your errant dll. Any executables sharing that directory?

Not to my knowledge; again, the error message reads:
Cannot load "C:Program FilesCommon FilesMicrosoft SharedWeb Server Extensions40binfp4Awel.dll

What do you suggest? Would another uninstall/reinstall of Office 2000 Premium make a difference?
