Request for descriptive titles!

Hi all ya loungers.

I hope this is not too much of a sensitive issue, but I would like to request that the titles you provide for your posts be more descriptive of the body matter. I do frequent searches of data in various forums and although the search engine searches the content (body) of the post, its is the search results that become difficult to sort through!

For example: "Help with formula", "O/S issue", "Problem in Word", "Mail question?", "Help".....etc. These are very generalized and do not effectively describe the body content! When the list of search results appear, it will make it easier and faster to find the necessary help based on the list of good descriptive titles that the search engine provides.

I'm not sure if the administrators can assist in adding a banner to the NEW POST screen to remind posters of Proper Descriptions? If nothing can be done physically, I guess it would come down to Title etiquette - if there is something like that!!!.

Never-the-less...I don't think its a major issue, else this would have been raised long time ago. I guess it just started bugging me and I thought I'd raise it as an issue! ( No hard feelings to anyone! - )

PS: What is the limit (character count) that can be typed into a valid Title.

Tx
Regards,
Rudi

Descriptive subjects are very useful for searching, so I wholeheartedly support your request. The maximum length for the subject is 50 characters in Internet Explorer, perhaps less if you use Firefox.

Request for descriptive links

While we're at it, I'd like to request that people provide a summary of whatever link they're posting (in cases where it's not obvious). Links with obsure explanations like "Time for somethingr" or "This is why I something" and "this is when something" drive me nuts.

Re: Request for descriptive titles!

When viewing the page source for this page it include ths line:

The maximum length is 50 characters, some browsers such as Firefox obey this limit, others like IE ignore it.

- Someone has it in for IE!!! I've never counted the chars in my subject line, but I can recall some pretty long ones that may have gone beyond 50??!! Anyways...the point is the description of the post...not the length of the title!
Cheers

Re: Request for descriptive titles!

I hate to be a naysayer, Rudi, but I don't think we'll ever win this one, unfortunately. In The Lounge and most other forums, too many people post questions with subjects like: Help, Problem, What Is This, ad nauseum. They don't seem to realize that getting attention to their question is in large part based on what people see when they review a list of topics. As JohnBF says, it's in the "rules" but many folks unfortunately don't EVER read those. Let's face it, we can't even get people to make sure their Profiles are somewhat accurate, let alone to use care in posting a question.

Re: Request for descriptive titles!

You can strike a blow for this, Rudi, without requiring the Admins to do anything. When you post your own questions and replies, use a descriptive subject line that relates to the topic, regardless of the original subject line. It isn't foolproof but it will mean that the thread will turn up in more searches than otherwise.

Most of us (including yours truly) get lazy and accept the original subject line in our responses , but it isn't necessary to do so.

Re: Request for descriptive titles!

Thanx for the advice Charlotte! I will most definetly consider that!

BigAl...I know what you mean...its like fighting a raging bull! However, a little reminding and -ing will help for the next week or so!!!

Thx for all the support from the other replies. TOGETHER, WE CAN CONQUER!!!! Or as <!profile=Jezza>Jezza<!/profile> would say: Una , NOS CAN VICTUM (And he should be proud of me now.....as "EGO can iam narro Latin") thanx to My Latin Teacher....

Re: Request for descriptive titles!

At first I thought that this was a request to Rename Jezza, but see now that it has a serious purpose.

(1) I agree with sentiments above that it's impossible to police new users. There's no stopping people from dreaming up novel subject lines like "I need help!".

(2) We can, however, lead by example.

(3) I am using the Lounge Search facility to rein myself in a little. I try to make my subject line meaningful, and I try to take the time to use the entire subject line as the target of a search before posting. This is not foolproof, but if I am going to post a subject "calendar control - no change", I ought, at least, to have satisfied myself on all threads that do pop up from a search for "calendar control - no change".

Request for descriptive Subjects/Titles

Aren't you being a little guilty yourself?
I know what you mean by 'Title', but what you are referring to is the 'Subject' of the thread. Someone looking for a discussion in this Forum on the subject of Subjects, won't find it by perusing the index if their view is Collapsed Threads.

And let's hope he does not think your are truly describing him as "something suspended: as a : an ornament (as on a necklace) allowed to hang free" (pendant) as opposed to "a formalist or precisionist in teaching" (pedant).

Re: Request for descriptive Subjects/Titles

I suspect a search for "pendant" and only clicking on Scuttlebutt posts might show that that spelling is not as uncommon as you might think....
