    Internet Explorer (Latest)

I have inadvertently created a window on my desktop which seems to be part of IE. The window is about 1.5" square and I can't get rid of it. It's bland and white at present. If I fiddle round with it it becomes a window into the top half of the IE screen showing in turn the different junk that appears in the top half of a hotmail screen. I don't know what I did but Ihave also found that a desktop link to Hotmail gives 'page cannot be displayed'. Another shortcut works fine.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks in anticipation.

Immediately perform full system scan with your Antivirus program (don't forget to update virus definitions before scanning).

Update and perform system scan with anty-spyware program (Spybot, Lavasoft Ad-Aware). If you don't have them, download and install them (they are free!).
Also I would highly recommend "system immunization" by SpyBot.

Check all suspicious programs installed (Start | Control Panel | Ad or Remove Programs) and remove all programs called "browser accelerator", "search engine", "explorer toolbar" and so on.

If it doesn't help, unbrand Internet Explorer:
    Start | Run, type

    rundll32.exe iedkcs32.dll,Clear

and hit Enter (make sure you put a space after "exe" and no space after "dll,").

You haven't inadvertantly set a web page to be on your desktop?

That sounds as though it might fit. However How do I tell? Also If it were a full web page it should be resizable. When I did have pictures and text on the white square I seemed to be able, with difficulty and a lot of fiddling, to get most of advertising garbage that fills the top half of a hotmail screen in turn on the white square.
    Thanks for the suggestion
    Mike.

Have you checked your desktop settings as per my attachment? Is anything selected as an web page?

I've seen this kind of thing caused by bugs in display device drivers.

Does the white square survive a reboot?
Is it always in the same place?
