Self Destructing Email after being read (Outlook 2000)

Has anyone heard about how to make an email "self destruct" after someone you've sent the email to has read it? I've not heard about how to set it up and would like more information on how to do it.

This can't be done with native Microsoft products unless running Exchange 2003, Outlook 2003, and Information Rights Management is installed http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechn...ain/rmsirm.mspx.

Around the time it launched Office 2003, Microsoft introduced a rights management product that lets you set detailed privileges on messages and documents. I haven't read much about it, but there were some posts in the Lounge when it was first announced (if you search for digital rights management across the Office boards, hopefully they will come up).

Otherwise, here have been third party products from companies such as Omniva (formerly known as Disappearing Inc. and lately acquired by Liquid Machines; product info) that do similar things, at least for the large corporate market.

But if the email is sent to a NONE Office 2003 email supported program the self destruct does NOT happen.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

... unless Senator Orrin Hatch (R-UT) zaps your computer remotely.

But seriously, a good point Dave - the Exchange 2003/Outlook 2003/IRM expiry 'feature' only works within the same environment.

Maybe something has changed, but I understood that the interior content of the message was secured and could only be read using a free client plug-in that you download from MS. So while the message remains, its contents are effectively inaccessible (unless you have a LOT of time on your hands. )

On a closer reading of the link I provided in my response to the OP, it's not unequivocal but appears that any message to which IRM restrictions are applied has to be verified against the Rights Management Server to be opened. I would interpret this is meaning the message can't be viewed outside the Server environment unless the outside-of-server user has access to and is somehow registered with the Rights Management Server.

That's how I read it also - not self-destructing but inaccessible even if it gets across the firewall. Must be becoming a bit in my old age!

You know why you never give an a tea break?

Because you have to retrain him when it's done!
