Strange Arabic(?) format (2002)

I've just come across a strange effect in a worksheet which I have been using for years. (It is a blank form that is automatically filled in from a csv file.)

If I enter in a cell (for example)

A1 - 4

I get what is shown in the attachment.
(Actually entering any number gives some kind of 'result'.)

Investigation shows the cell has been Custom number formatted with

B2d-mmm

which doesn't mean a thing to me - I honestly cannot recall using it.

Is it possible that format has been there all the time and I've just never noticed it? The cell would normally be populate with a string rather than a number.

    Hi Leif,

See MSKB article XL2002: Cells Automatically Format with Hijri Date Format When You Type "a-" Before a Number for an explanation and a way to avoid this behaviour.

Many thanks - all resolved now. I never thought to search on "arabic" ....

(Spooky though - as soon as you answered I got a call from the Middle East...)

I bet they said: "Leif...do not type an A in front of a number!!" (In a very heavy arabian dialect of course!!)
    Regards,
    Rudi
