How best to shade a margin? (2003)

I would like to format a document so that left and right margins are shaded (alternately) from the very top to the very bottom of the page.
The only way that I can think to achieve this would be to use a table but this becomes a formatting nightmare over multiple pages, not least because I'd need to insert one table for odd pages and another for even pages. I can't help thinking there must be an easier way - does anyone have any ideas?

    Many thanks

Could you include the shading as a graphic attached to the document header. Similar to the way that Word does watermarks?

I am probably being a bit thick but if I did this, would the header not have to be the height of the whole page?

Graphics attached to the header can be anywhere on the page! That is how watermarks are done.

Here is an example for you.

Thank you, that's certainly the kind of thing I'm looking for - but for the life of me I can't see how you've done it!? I opened the document and revealed all formatting but simply can't fathom how you achieved shading in only the margins.

The shading is just two grey rectangles. View > Header and Footer and you can edit them like any other graphic.

Select View | Header and Footer
Stuart created two shaded rectangles, one along the left side and one along the right side of the page.

Fantastic - I had no idea you could do that with graphics in headers! Problem solved, thank you :-)
