    Microphone not working

I am trying to voice annotate some PowerPoint slides and it appears that no sound is reaching PowerPoint from my microphone. I loaded Windows Sound Recorder to test and it shows no voice either. Now, it could be a defective microphone and I am going to borrow another one to try but I think it is something else. I ran into this problem years ago and had to change something somewhere in the Control Panel to make the microphone work. It's the same machine and I suspect it's the same problem but I cannot remember what I had to change. Any suggestions?

    Re: Microphone not working

Double-click the volume control in your taskbar to bring up all 'channels' - Options > Properties... and check Microphone is selected (and not muted).

    Re: Microphone not working

    Ronny,
You can also go to Control Panel>Sounds & Audio Devices> and check the settings for the type of microphone you are using.
Also under the "voice tab" there is a "test hardware wizard" to check your sound system.
AND, on the voice recording>volume>advanced, there is a other controls box. You may need to check the box- 1.Microphone boost.
If you mic is fairly new and with a miniature mic element, it is probably an "Electret" type, that requires the element to be powered by the mic boost.

    Ronny,
If what Leif and Viking mentioned does not work, check to see if your microphone lead is hooked up to the motherboard. You may need to plug it into the correct pin(s) on the audio header, as some system builders routinely don't install it, figuring most people don't use a microphone.

    Re: Microphone not working

I appreciate the help from everyone. I determined that the problem was not the microphone itself as the one from work had the same problem. I played around with the Control Pannel Sound option for a long time without any luck. I next tried the volumn control in the Task Bar and I changed something, I am not sure what, that started everything working just fine. Since I'm not exactly sure what I did, I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it does not get undone.

    Thanks for the help

    Hi Ronny,

It was probably this setting that you made the changes to. HTH <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

    Re: Microphone not working

Doc Watson, sure hope you are still checking this thread as I found it in Search to try and find a solution to my microphone problem I am having the same issues as Ronny except the mike I have did work with our HP PC and doesn't with our Toshiba Satellite laptop. There is no volume control in the task bar of this machine. Where do I find that setting you showed to Ronny? Maybe that is my problem, too.

I did find the audio recorder and tested it with no luck. There seemed to be a switch below the mike and headset jacks, but it doesn't help whether it is on or off.

    Hopefully,

Linda (a Lounger you have helped on a number of issues in the past!)

See Viking33's reply higher up in this thread (<post:=493,203>post 493,203</post:>) - it describes another method to get to the sound settings.

    Re: Microphone not working

Hans, thank you, thank you! I thought I had already read and done the post you referred to, but went back to reread it more closely and, after quite a bit of trial and error, the mike is now working! I checked the mic1 boost box and, at first, the mic2 box in case that would help. No luck as test kept saying it wasn't working. When I unchecked the mic2 box, it worked!

One other thing I did (not sure if it had anything to do with this) was select Windows default in audio tab. There was no program in the box at all when I first looked. Also noticed that the speaker configuration selected was for a PC with separate speakers so changed it to laptop stereo to suit this computer. Not sure that did anything but it was one other thing I did.

Many thanks. Now I can go back to doing the speaking part of my beginning Spanish course!

"Buena suerte" was the translation provided by Altavista Babelfish for "Good luck". It might well be incorrect...
