Problem reinstalling Word97

I have tried for days to reinstall Word97 because of a problem I was having. I first tried to uninstall it using Control Panel | Add/Remove programs, but it would not let me! So I was forced to shift through the MSKB and find out how to manually extract Office97. I removed EVERY trace of it from my files and my registry. It took HOURS.
I was able to reinstall Excel and Publisher with NO problem. However, before Word can finish installing, I get a CRASH!

The "Setup is updating your system..." Screen appears, and then CRASH. The warning message says this:

ACMSetup caused an invalid page fault in kernel32.dll at 0177:bff7b9e7.

I am forced to shut down the installation of Word. If I examine the C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOfficeSetup files, I can see that THIS is where MS stores it's setup and uninstall information. Excel has these files:

acmexl.exe
acmexl.lst
Excel97.stf
XL97.dll

Word has COMPARABLE files -- except there is NO Word97.stf.

This .stf files is apparently created during the "Setup is updating your system..." message. Since THIS file is NOT correctly created, I CANNOT uninstall Word through Control Panel | Add/Remove!! It is CATCH22 all over again...

Does anyone know a solution?? Thanks.

There is a free utility "out there" that will remove every trace of Office 97 from a system to allow a clean reinstall. Don't remember the name or where right now. You should be able to find it by doing a search of the Word newsgroups on the microsoft site through google.com. You can restrict your search to the word groups by putting "microsoft.public.word.*" in the box for newsgroup. Search for reinstall and you should find it.

I'd look for it, but I'm trying to find a new web host right now. My sites have been down since Wednesday, and with them half my email.
