Can't stop Windows trying to update (XP)

I recently bought a used laptop, which did not have any software disks.

It works fine, but had not been updated for 18 months or so.

I updated Windows to SP2 & set up automatic updates.

Windows is fine, but it has downloaded SP3 for Office & keeps trying to install it. It then asks for the disk, which I don't have, so I click cancel & it goes away until next time!

A file has obviously been downloaded & it keeps trying to install itself.

Is there any way to find & remove it?

    Many thanks,

    Kevin

You can check the following keys in the Windows registry (using RegEdit) to see if there is an entry related to the update; if so, you can remove it:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentV ersionRun
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentV ersionRunOnce
    HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVe rsionRun

    Dear Hans,

    Thank you for the post.

I looked in those locations, but nothing is listed.

For more comprehensive information on what runs automatically when you start your computer, you can download and install the free utility Sysinternals Freeware - Autoruns.

Re: Can't stop Windows trying to update (XP)

Microsoft Installer Security Patches (.msp files) are stored in WindowsInstaller folder. On startup Windows Installer service is checking all stored patches, and if a patch is not installed, automatically run msiexec.exe trying to install it.

If you do not want to install particular patch already stored in your computer:

    1. Open Windows Explorer (My Computer) and navigate to C:WindowsInstaller (or C:WinntInstaller). If you do not see this folder (it is hidden), from Tools menu choose Folder Options, then View tab and select "Show hidden files and folders" and uncheck "Hide extensions for known file types" and "Hide protrcted operation system files (Recommended)". Confirm your choice and click OK.

    2. In WindowsInstaller folder right-click each MSP file and from pop-up menu choose Properties.

    3. On Properties dialog click Summary tab and read information in Title section (this is the only way to figure out which MSP file is which).

    4. When you found the file you are lookng for (Title: "Office XP Hotfix; MAINSP3.MSGR2PB..."etc, Size: 54,952 KB) you can move it to another folder of your choice and rename it.

After you move (or delete) MSP file Windows Installer wouldn't trying to install it on startup.
