Google Earth

Google Maps have been expanding their satellite coverage of the earth with more higher resolution images becoming available.

Broadband users can now download Google Earth which combines the satellite imagery with maps and Google search. It allows you to fly over and view the terrain in 3D.

    However...

    Google Earth downloads temporarily delayed
Thanks for your interest in Google Earth, but we're sorry we can't offer you a download right now. As you know, Google Earth is in beta, and we're still building out our ability to take on new users. We're making good progress, and expect to be able to accept new downloads shortly, so we recommend you check back daily at earth.google.com. We hope to be able to welcome you and other new planet surfers soon.

And do I detect the first sign of chargeable software from Google?
    Google Earth Plus - $20
    Google Earth Pro - $400
Google Earth Enterprise Solutions - just how much would you want to pay?*

(Edited by JohnBF on 29-Jun-05 11:27. )
If Google Earth Plus, at $20, includes a functional GPS interface with map download (to the GPS), it'll save GPS users a bundle on map CDs. I'll have to read more.

Edit: there wasn't much more to read - apparently the link goes the other way, it uploads GPS waypoints to Google Map. Just the thing when you're lost - run home, upload your waypoints, and see where you are. Makes perfect sense.

    Re: Google Earth

So I must have been their new user for today. I have experimented with it today and am quite impressed with the ability to zoom in and fly around the generated 3D terrain.

    Re: Google Earth

I've managed to download it, but my area is very blurred unless you look at it from 30,000' It is only about 100 yards out in the postcode, too!

    Re: Google Earth

I downloaded it this morning & had a quick fly about. Very impressive, though as John says, difficult to get any good detail in the UK (certainly around my area). Maybe this will be improved in future...

    Re: Google Earth

A little more investigation shows that the picture resolution is very variable.

Some parts are extremely good, e. g. some US cities.

Some parts are pretty good, such as parts of Sydney, Australia (but curiously not the area around the Central Business District/Sydney Harbour Bridge/Sydney Opera House).

Others appear very blurred (occasionally cloud-covered, even!) like much of the UK, much of Australia, and so on, which seem to be derived from satellite imagery.

I got a good idea of how good the resolution was likely to be from this page.

In principle, if the resolution can be improved globally (ha-ha?), you might never need an atlas again...

    Re: Google Earth

I've seen my house on Google Earth. I'm not sure exactly when they took the photo, but it looks like someone in our house needs to learn how to park the car a bit nearer the curb!

If one was to check off the different "DG Coverage" options, one will see outlines around the area of the images taken in the selected date.

Nice to know that I have the lightest color roof in the 'hood. I'm also surprised how reflective my back deck is.

I was a bit unsure, but it seemed so completely empty that it seemed to me that it ought to be a railway!
