I found this info on the web a long while back. It takes you through a logical step by step to building a big nested formula. It is VERY hand if you struggle building these types of formulas!

Take a look at this doc!

Hi Rudi

Thanks for that, I will peruse the document and see if it helps.

Nice one, Rudi.
I often find it helps in understanding formulas (not just big 'uns) to use named ranges where possible, startdate<1990, that sort of thing, and sometimes it helps to 'build' the formula in the idiots' guide box you get by clicking on the = sign in the formula bar.

Besides breaking a formula up individually and then connecting them all up as in the attachment, I also find the Function Palette of Excel is superb, whether you are creating a new nested formula or editing an existing one! If you have never noticed this before, try this example:
1. Create a small nested formula in a cell :
eg. Or copy this one to cell A1 :
=IF(ISERROR(VLOOKUP(B1,C1:E10,2,FALSE))>5,SUM(G1:G 10),AVERAGE(H1:H10))
2. Select the cell containing the formula and click on the (fx) Paste Function toolbar button.
3. This activates the palette and displays the formula in the formula bar (below the toolbars)
4. Now...if you click on the NAME of the functions (in the formula bar), it will switch between the various palettes and allow you to check and modify the arguments in the individual functions. The palette also shows where errors will occur, and shows the final result before you choose OK.

I find this extremely handy!
