Update Windows XP Home to SP2 (Windows XP Home, SP1)

I haven't updated my computers to SP2. Do you advise that I do so? Are there any special problems I should watch for?

    Thanks.

    Welcome to the Lounge!

I would strongly recommend to apply SP-2 update.

Generally your system becomes more stable and secure, but some settings may be lost during update (for example, you must re-configure your home network connection).
But look at this as the upgrade to new version of Windows - the difference between WinXP SP-2 and WinXP/WinXP SP-1 is close to one between Win98 and WinME.

    Read this:
Windows XP Service Pack 2 Problem Solver
Here you can find answers to your questions.

Don't forget to apply all post-SP-2 security fixes after upgrade (there are 25 - 30 of them, depending of your system configuration). Use Windows Update service to download and install them (this is the first thing Windows will ask you to do after upgrade).

Use Windows Firewall, if you don't use third-party firewall. Read this:
    Understanding Windows Firewall

    Good luck!

The more boringly normal your PCs and installed software are, the more straightforward the upgrade to SP2 is likely to be!

Most people have no problems with the upgrade -- but some have, so it is worth making sure that you have available software installation CDs or install files, and have notes of the settings you have made.

In the near future, Microsoft will be supplying XP updates ONLY for machines at SP2 level...

I also stronlgy recommend you install SP-2. Before you begin, BACKUP each machine. For a lot of information from Microsoft see Windows XP Service Pack 2. If you have more than one PC I'd also recommend you Download Windows XP Service Pack 2 for IT Professionals and Developers and burn it to a CD. Don't be put off by the name it is just the odd Microsoft way of naming the full service pack.

Re: Update Windows XP Home to SP2 (Windows XP Home

Thanks to all three of you for your replies. I have taken your advice, updated BIOS, virus protection, scanned for spyware, etc. on both computers. I downloaded the IT Windows XP SP2 and burned it to a CD. Only the final step remains. I'll admit that reading I would have to reconfigure my network worries me somewhat.
I'm presently burning CDs of all the files I want to save and then I'll tackle the SP2 update.

    Thanks again for your help.

    Barbara,

Reconfiguring the network connection is easy - just two additional steps:

    - After you installed SP-2, open Windows Explorer and right-click My Network Places icon on the left pane (or the icon on the Desktop, if you have one). From pop-up menu, choose Properties.
    - Network Connections window will open. On the left pane click "Create a new connection" link and follow the wizard.

    That's it!
