    Outlook 2000/2003 (2000 SR1)

I think that I am in serious trouble! Three months ago I purchased a new PC for my wife, which came with a three month's trial of Office 2003. I installed Office 2003, and transferred across the pst file from my wife's old computer, which was running Office 2000. The transfer was entirely successful, and she has been using Outlook 2003 without difficulty, but with some grumbles at the format, saying that she preferred the 2000 format.

We today received advice that the trial period is up, and requiring payment if she continued to use it. We decided that the additional features of 2003 did not justify the additional cost, and it was agreed that I should remove Office 2003, and reinstall Office 2000. I saved the outlook.pst file, and assumed that this would be readable by Outlook 2000. However, now that I have reinstalled Outlook 2000, and replaced the outlook.pst file, I get the message 'The file ...outlook.pst is not compatible with this version of the Personal Folders information service. Contact your administrator'.

It seems that this is a Microsoft 'gotcha'. Do I now have to explain to my wife that her old emails and contact information have gone to the big bit bucket in the sky, or is there some means of retrieving them? Presumably I could pay up and get Office 2003, but I do not really want to do this, since she was very happy with Office 2000. Any advice, please.

    Regards, Howard Merkin

Indeed Outlook 2003 has a new (unicode) .pst format that is not readable by older versions. Do you know someone else with Outlook 2003? If so, he/she could create a .pst file in the old format (Outlook 2003 has that capability) and transfer the contents of your wife's .pst file to it.

Thank you, Hans, for your reply.

Unfortunately, I cannot trace anyone who has installed Outlook 2003. I shall keep on looking, but if that fails, I seem to be faced with the alternative of losing all the contents of the old pst file, or spending

    Howard:

If your wife's .pst is small enough to fit on a cd, you can snail mail to me in U.S. and I'll be glad convert and mail back. I'll provide address in a private email.

    Cheers.

    Allan,

My wife's .pst is only 33Mb, so I would have no difficulty in putting it onto a CD. If you can send me your US address in a private email, I shall be happy to send you a disk. It would be much appreciated if you can do this, and I should be happy to reciprocate in any way possible.

I would mention that I am still in the dog house!

    Howard:

Let's get you out of the dog house.

Since the file is quite small you can send to me the following way:
Go to www.dropload.com and register. then upload the file and dropload it to: apapkin@gmail.com. This is a secondary email address I use. I'll dropload it back to you after conversion.
Send me an email address at that gmail address with the email address you wish me to dropload it.
This is a great free service.

    Re: Outlook 2000/2003 (2000 SR1)

To conclude this thread on a happy note, Allan converted my wife's outlook.pst file and sent it back to me by dropload. I imported it into her current .pst file, and all is well at last.

I felt rather sore that Microsoft had not warned me that the .pst file could not be transferred back to an Outlook 2000 file, but after an internet search, I found Knowledge Base article 839109, which does describe the problem and gives a workaround, which, of course, requires a copy of Outlook 2003!

    Regards, Howard
