Words From On Low

I have noted the "Words From On High" news flash this morning, but rather by accident than on purpose.

I would consider it a bonus if each and every time a new Words From On High is posted, I received a copy, or at least an email notification when a new posting was made. My experience has been that a WFOH posting is always significant and of deep interest to me. In this case, like Jezza, I'm not guilty, but am encouraged to hear that someone(s) in the Lounge have been working on my behalf to track down a problem.

Me being me, I got part way through that paragraph and paused to wonder if indeed there was already an option to Subscribe to WFOH, as I do for VBA & Lounge Matters.

There Is.

So the thrust of my question changes slightly:

Would it make sense to default ALL new and/or current subscriptions to an email notification from WFOH?

Just to add my worth, having a subscription to all users could possibly cause a problem for the Lounge having to send potentially 1,000's of messages out to Loungers in one go. I will defer to the Admin guys as they are in a better position to tell us. The idea of subscribing to WFOH is an excellent idea though Chris, it never occurred to me.

Another problem is that a more than half of those who register as a user never become active. We have over 14,000 registered users, but less than 1,200 of them logged in during the last month. so we'd be sending out e-mails to lots of people who haven't visited the Lounge for years, if ever.

It would be a reminder that they should be visiting "The Lounge"

Wow, can you imagine the potential? -- I guess one could say it's Their Loss .. but how would they know?

Does that number take into account those of us who never logout? I have not specifically logged in for quite a while now - I have only logged out a few times - usually when the cookie crumbled or something like that.

OK. Maybe "Last On" within the past two months?

BTW, How do we get to know about those classified as "if ever"? (grin!)

I thought that after a certain period of time -say, in a year's time? - people were culled from the list if they haven't logged in? If not, then I "could" be inactive for 3 or 4 years and hope to come back and find "myself" still on the list? Not that I would ever be gone THAT long!!

Re: Words From On Low

In the past, Eileen would send "inactive" users a reminder, and if they didn't react within a month, they were removed. This hasn't been done for a long time now. Perhaps we should start this again...

Yeah, there are users in the database who haven't been logged in since shortly after I became a Lounger - I won't give any examples. Unless you Admins or Claude think it saves a lot, I don't see why we should bother purging. So they're inactive, so what?

Re: Words From On Low

It is sort of like when buying something new - say a new pair of jeans - one is supposed to throw out the old pair when buying the new pair...BUT, sometimes the old pair of jeans fit real nice...broken in just right!
Seriously, we really should do some notifying/purging of the 'deadwood' ...I know other Forum websites do that on a yearly basis.
Maybe that could be a little extra job for ...to earn his keep.

Re: Words From On Low

Inactive users used to get purged on a daily basis. Eileen discontinued that years ago as it caused a lot of problems with users who would visit the lounge only rarely needing to re-subscribe and go through all the motions.

As for sending out email notification for the WFOH board to all users, in theory that's a great idea, in practice though it would be very similar to spamming insofar that it would be up to users to un-subscribe without them ever having subscribed. I think we all get enough of those annoying emails already without us having to burden the load any further
Cheers, Claude.
