XP won't start (Windows XP Pro)

Happy month loungers.
Not sure what I'm doing posting this query but it's an attempt to help my neighbour. He has PC running Windows XP Pro. 'Suddenly' the PC will not boot - during the initialisation, an error window appears saying that Windows Explorer (Windows Explorer mind, not Internet Explorer) has errored and the usual option to Send to MS or Don't Send is offered. If Don't Send is clicked, the taskbar (ie Start, Quick Launch, Task Bar, System Tray) disappears. The PC will not respond to right clicks - there are no icons on the desktop.
If the error is left and the machine left to get on with things, it settles down with no icons but the start button is visible along with everything else on the task bar.
Some things work from Start - it seems to be anything at the application level, like word, outlook, etc. but any attempt to start Control Panel, Help, Search ie system type things causes the egg timer to appear for a while before it disappears with no program started.
I tried to start it in Safe Mode, but it got the same error as before (Windows Explorer failure) and regardless of whether I left it completely alone, clicked Don't Send or even Send to MS, the system hung with Safe mode not started.
He has not got an Emergency Repair Disk.
Does any of this make sense to anyone? Has a virus got on to the machine?
Sorry for the rambling - I don't do systems and what little I do know relates to W2K, not XP
Hoping that loungers can help.
Thanks

In the absence of more experienced advice, I'd try a repair install. Insert the original XP CD and you should be offered you the option of repairing an existing installation.

Has he run the usual a/v and other malware programs to check for infection?

Re: XP won't start (Windows XP Pro)

Sorry - forgot to mention that.
Ran Norton 2005 and it found 5 infections - 4 dialers and one Malware (NDotNet). All diallers were in the restore area so Norton could not repair the infected files (although I did log the file names of the offending items)

Thanks for your help.

Thanks for the info, Leif. I didn't know you could do this.
I'll give it a try if he is willing to let me have a go.

Thanks for your help.

Could you post the file names from that log. This sounds like a dialer or browser hijacker has created some problems with the system files or a necessary .dll file and is interfering with the boot up process. I'd suggest trying to remove the problem before attempting a repair installation. It will most likely require a bit of time and diligent effort to excise this thing from the system.

The removal instructions fro NDotNet can be found here. HTH

Re: XP won't start (Windows XP Pro)

Hi Doc
Thanks for helping.
Norton found five infections. There were three GBDial diallers, one TrafficAdvance dialler and one malware, NDotNet. As stated, I think these were all in the restore area so Norton could not delete them. The PC is so that I can't follow Symantec's instructions to switch off Restore.
File names recorded are :

newdotnet3_70.dll
A01800886.CPY
A0191054.CPY
A0181165.CPY
A0181191.CPY

I did have a peek in the report that the Windows Explorer crash generated - don't have it to hand but I did notice that the crash occurred in SHDOCVW.DLL - stupidly did not get the failing address. Can reproduce if it helps any - but it will take a bit of time.

The problem with removing any of these is that all navigation type programs (Windows Explorer, My Computer, Search) won't run so I don't know how to remove files without access to these applications. I have a version of SHDOCVW.DLL from my PC which I was going to try and replace on the offending PC, but I can't work out how to do it with no navigation tools.
Got any ideas?

Re: XP won't start (Windows XP Pro)

There are removal instructions for NewDotNet here, but from what you're saying you won't be able to use them. I would normally tell you to boot into Safe Mode and do most of this stuff, but you say you are unable to get past the error message in Safe Mode either. A01800886.CPY, A0191054.CPY, A0181165.CPY & A0181191.CPY don't turn up on any of my searches and as best I can tell are copies of something. But there is no file extension .CPY that I know of.

Without access to Windows Explorer, Control Panel or Safe Mode I'm not sure what I can do to help here. My best suggestion at this point is to try these instructions at iamnotageek.com and if you are unable to follow them because of the PC's problems then I would recommend posting to their site and waiting for one of their "experts" to pickup your thread and help you through this very sticky problem. If you are going to post there, please read and follow all their rules and return at least once a day and "bump" your post back to the top of the list (there are so many people with problems that you will be at least 3 pages down at the end of each day). HTH

Edited by Doc to add There are removal instructions for GBdialer here and this one could be costing someone some . It's a porn dialer that uses high rate phone services to make it's calls. There are also removal instructions for TrafficAdvance dialer here. This is the same type of dialer as GBdialer calling porn sites using expensive phone services. Don't connect this PC to a modem until it is cleaned up !!

Good find Alan !! Don't know why my Google didn't turn that up, but no matter, it's here. If disabling System Restore and then deleting them doesn't work then try deleting them with Dr. Delete. It's designed for files like this. Another would be Pocket KillBox HTH

Doc:

I searched thusly in Google: *.cpl instead of with front part of filename.

Re: XP won't start (Windows XP Pro)

That would explain it, unless there's a typo in yours. I searched for the full file names and *.CPY & *.cpy. All yielded no results.

Edited by Doc to add ... My mistake.. I must have only thought I did a search for the lower case *.cpy. I just did one and got several hits, the MajorGeeks site among them. Thanks for keepin' me honest.

Re: XP won't start (Windows XP Pro)

Hi loungers
Sorry for the delay but I've been conversing with the helpers over at this forum that Doc recommended.
The problem seems to be fixed.
A recommendation was to run sfc /scannow and this restored system files. Rebooted and the machine came up OK.
Thanks a million for the pointer to the other forum Doc, and thanks to the other loungers who gave their time and expertise to help.
