Can't get into Windows XP Home (Windows XP Home SP1)

Got an error message that PPCtl.dll was damaged and could not be repaired. It was from Pest Patrol. No shortcuts or links were available.
Rebooted and now Windows won't start. Tried Safe Mode, which started but went straight into windows startup screen instead and died there. Can't reach System Restore either. Did a search for the damaged dll but could not find it before I shut down.
I am on another computer, please send replies to Monsoon843@comcast.net. Please help I'm desperate.

Correction: Send replies to Monsoon843@msn.com

Gloria,

As you should be well aware, we strongly discourage Loungers from making requests for replies to be sent privately.

As <!rule=10>Rule 10<!/rule> states: "This defeats the purpose of the Lounge which is designed to share information as widely as possible. If you are worried you will miss any replies, check the box to receive email notification. You can also set this globally in the Email/Subscriptions section of your Profile."

If you wish to receive by email copies of any replies you may get, please ensure your profile is updated with your preferred email address. This way we will all know what advice has been given to you.

I apoligize but I was so upset and I wanted any ones help to get to me as quickly as possible. Since I couldn't read my own mail, I asked that all suggestions be sent to a computer that's in the same room as I. I will not do that again. Have to forget about the lounges help if I can't get into my Operating System.

I can read it now because I just paid Microsoft to repair Windows XP, I couldn't before because I was shut out of my OS.

An original post suggests that computer is infected with some kind of malware (PestPatrol is damaged). I would strongly recommend to clean installation first from all possible threats (viruses, worms, spyware, ets) and only after that to install SP-2.

I'm still afraid that if I do, I'll really have trouble. Calling Microsoft for help and another $35 is not my idea of spending money wisely. My money tree just went into hibernation.

I also recommend installing SP2 and the subsequent updates. Without SP2 you are leaving yourself open to quite a few security holes.

I realize that Tony, but I believe that I will also be letting myself in for can't open this, can't find that. This is not compatible with SP2. My husband installed it and did it create problems for him? You betcha it did. Maybe when there's hotfixes for it I'll get it.

Tony, I just realized something. Since Windows XP was just repaired today, maybe SP2 will go on with no problems. You and several other posters advised me to get it, if I need help I know I can depend on you guys and gals, right?

But you must have had access to the Lounge to be able to post (and edit) your original question, no?

And to be fair, you were asking for help on a Sunday when the Lounge is at its quietest!

Can you give us an idea of what the problem and fix were? You are telling us it has been 'repaired' - which is good - but then asking for advice relative to that repair.

Re: Can't get into Windows XP Home (Windows XP Hom

Yes, I had access to another computer in the same room with a different email client. Mail addressed to me would not have arrived at the second computer. Since the computer wasn't setup in my name and password, I wouldn't have received posts from you guys, would I?

I realize Sunday is the worst day of the week to receive responses, but desperation makes us do strange things, doesn't it?

The tech had me press F12 and select IDE CD-ROM. pressing Enter once and right away. Windows setup appeared and the rest is history. My display settings were messed up, short cuts on the desktop (some) no longer worked, drivers had to be reinstalled. I should never had clicked OK when I was informed that to improve the appearance of visual elements, Windows will automatically adjust your screen resolutions. I also had to reinstall Macromedia Flash 7 when I tried to open my homepage (Comcast.net).

That's the end of this tale and the end of my $35.

>> Since the computer wasn't setup in my name and password, I wouldn't have received posts from you guys, would I?

No less than you would have received the direct emails you were asking for! But presumably you could browse and log in to the Lounge?

>> Windows setup appeared and the rest is history...

So it sounds like you did a re-install - the advice Bob (Viking33) seemed to have been giving you (for $35 less than MS!).
To be honest, I don't think this 'repair' will make much difference as to the outcome of installing SP2.

I don't think I'm alone in being a little confused as to what originally went wrong. In your original post you mentioned that you had an errror message saying "PPCtl.dll was damaged" but you are now suggesting it had something to do with adjusting your screen resolution. Before you do anything else, I recommend you get any Pest Patrol problem sorted out, check all hardware drivers are up to date, carry out a thorough virus/spyware/hijack scan, and a full scan of your hard drive(s) with Chkdsk.

Until you are certain of the cause of your original problem, it may also be worth finding and setting up a way to easily reach the Lounge on the second computer you have access to.

Re: Can't get into Windows XP Home (Windows XP Hom

Correct, I was able to access the lounge as you can tell because I posted my request for assistance. I would have been unable to read any posts sent to me, which would have ended up being an excercise in futility for the sender.

I'll try to clear up any confusion. The dll file belonged to Pest Patrol and it broke something in Windows causing me not to be able to boot into WinXP. Repairing Windows fixed what ever was broken or corrupted. Once I was in, I removed Pest Patrol completly, I dared not run it again. I decided against a reinstall of the offending program, if it could happen once, might it not happen again?

What caused the problem with my screen resolutions had nothing to do with Pest Patrol. At the end of the repair I received a notice that Windows was about to adjust my screen resolutions and like a fool I cliked ok. I had to use my Dell CD to reinstall the drivers, that took care of that little problem. So, Windows is running fine, Pest Patrol is gone and my screen resolutions are set just the way I want them.

I hope this explaination clears up any confusion in any ones mind. I would like to thank everyone that offered me assistance. Please consider this topic closed.
