    Printing old Wordpad docs

I have a few "doc" files that were compiled using an OLD Wordpad from some earlier Windows days. I'm guessing it may have been Win 95.
I can read the files OK but the formatting seems to be out of whack somehow. When I try to print these files it comes out with one line per page only. Therefore, the printer sees this as a doc with <big>65,635 </big> pages long!!!!

That's just a bit more paper and ink than I want to use up.

I tried to import it into a few Word Processor progs that I have, but they seem to make things worse. ( Works, Open Office and ABI, and Wordpad direct )

Any ideas how I can get rid of the print formatting and print it out normally?

I'd guess they would be even older - I don't think WordPad has changed much since Windows 95.
    - Have you tried MS Word?
    - Could you attach a sample file (zipped)?

Have you tried copying and pasting into Notepad, then into a new Word document?
If you get any odd formatting characters showing up in Notepad, you could do a quick Find and Replace all.

    Hans,
You are right. I looked at the date that I archived them. It's June 1992. So I must have created them under DOS. ( I didn't like Win 3.1 ) Went right to 95 after DOS.

No I didn't try Word but I do have a copy of it from Works Suite 2001. I suppose I'll have to dig it out and try it that way. Sample would be too large for the Lounge, even when zipped.

    Leif,
I did try to copy and paste into new wordpad document but that didn't work well either. Embedded formatting?
I didn't try a new Word doc since I don't have it installed. See my post to Hans.
After I dig it out I'll give that a try also.

Here I thought all I had to do was open the file and print it !

    Re: Printing old Wordpad docs

Are the file extensions .WRI ? If so, they were likely created with Windows 3.1 Write, the forerunner to Wordpad. I've encountered this problem myself, with the formatting going all weirdo. From memory, I had to deal with the text & graphics separately, and copy/paste into Word or Wordpad. The Windows 3.1 Write.exe application will run standalone, if you can extract it from your ancient 3.1 or 3.11 floppies.

This may not be possible, but if you can read the file(s) OK on screen, it may be worth a shot. Make a "work" copy and use a hex editor to look for the page eject character. I can't remember the ASCII code offhand but it should be easy to find out.

Did you try the intermediate step of pasting into Notepad which should strip it of odd characters?

I don't know which version of Word the function first appeard in, but in my copy of Word XP there is a Paste Special option only available from the Edit menu at the top of the page Edit>Paste Special that give you several formatting options, including one to paste as unformatted text.

I know that function goes back as far as Office 97 Doc. Prior to that I don't know.

    Alan,
The extensions are .DOC not .WRI. As I said, I avoided 3.1 like the plague and did install it once for a short time. I thought it was "clunky" so dumped it and went back to my good ole DOS until 95 came out. <img src=/S/flee.gif border=0 alt=flee width=25 height=25>

    Doc,
That's a possibility I may have to try. There HAS to be page breaks in there somewhere.
Meanwhile, I'm hunting up Word from the deep dark archives.

    Leif,
I did try pasting into WordPad, thinking Wordpad was an upgrade from NotePad with a few more features and more text capabilities . Not true?
