    Windows Explorer as for Win98 (SP2/Home)

    Hello, All

    (Sorry if this question has been asked before. I searched and couldn't find it, tho I think I've read similar questions.)

    Is it possible to configure/download Windows Explorer as it was with 98? We are trying to teach an 'old dog' the new tree readings, but he is being recalcitrant. It took months for him to feel somewhat comfortable with Windows Explorer as it was in 98 and now he's growling all the time.

    Thank you, and Happy 4th to the Americans.

    What specifically is he growling at?

    Hans - he's unhappy that
    1) it doesn't look the same;
    2) the the 'title' bar confuses him because it's not explicit enough (i.e., when looking at a folder that's on the C drive, the title bar shows the icon from the Explorer and doesn't say C:title of folder;
    3) that to get to the folder he uses most often (the one that's on the Local Disk), he has to click My Computer, then Local Disk, then on the folder.

    We have put a shortcut to that folder on the Desktop, which made him wag his tail, but when we're not here, he's fearful that navigating around XP's Explorer will cause him to display bad habits.

    Thanks for any help.

    You can fix 2) by visiting Tools > Folder Options and setting the check box next to "Display full path in title bar"
    You may be able to improve 3) by adding shortcuts to his favourite folder in a variety of places

    There's not really much you can do about 1), although it may help if you select Windows Classic as theme (in the Display Properties control panel) instead of one of the new Windows XP themes.

    2) Select Tools | Folder Options (in Windows Explorer), activate the View tab and tick the check box "Display the full path in title bar" (and probably also "Display the full path in the address bar").

    3) You've already found the solution. You might put the same shortcut in the Start menu and in the Quick Launch toolbar if he uses that, and you could remove the My Computer icon from the desktop (activate the Desktop tab of the Display Properties control panel, click Customize Desktop and clear the check box for My Computer).

    Stuart -

    Thanks for those 2 suggestions. We didn't notice the Display full path... box. That will certainly help!

    Evening, all.

    Still have a slight problem with displaying full path in the title bar. The full path shows in the Address Bar, but for some reason the title bar will show Microsoft Word, then name of the document. We have double-checked that Display Full path in title bar is selected, applied to all folders is selected.

    Any further suggestions re the title bar?

    Thanks much, as always!

    That sounds like the title bar of a Microsoft Word window, not like the title bar of a Windows Explorer window! If you're sure its an Explorer window, could you post a screenshot (max 640x480 pixels)?

    Hans -

    Oh, boy, I think I am an idiot. That "Show full path...." only applies to Explorer and not to Word docs?! So sorry.

    So, does that mean that one must use the Address Bar to see the path of the current Word document, or is there a way to get the path in the title bar of the Word doc? It seems in Win 98 I had it there....

    My ignorance is showing, showing, showing.

    Thank you

    The content of the Title bar for Microsoft Word is determined by the Word application, not by Windows.

    You can modify this using Visual Basic, but you would need to create a Macro procedure that runs whenever you start Word to do this. If you would like to learn how to do that then post a request in the Word forum and someone will try to help you.

    Thanks, Stuart. Shall go there and read the appropriate posts and, if necessary, pose my question there.
