    What's So Universal about USB?

The USB cables that came with my external hard drive and printer are different from the others, but the cables for my digital camera, MP3 player and GPS unit look very simimilar. If the device end of the cable for one device fits in a different device, may I assume it will work in that other device? I'd like to know because I have 5 USB devices but only 4 ports, so it would be convenient to be able to use the same cable for more than one device.

As far as I know they are interchangeable - I certainly use the same cables for multiple devices.
There appear to be four common types - see these pictures for examples of Types A and B etc, but I do have one special type which seems to be unique to one digital camera I have.
