Let's get the terminology straight first, to avoid confusion further on.
A merge document contains merge fields and a reference to a data source.
A merged document is the result of a mail merge. It does not contain merge fields any more, nor a reference to a data source.

"Merged documents, that contain merge fields and a reference to a data source." is a contradiction.

But on one computer the merge docs no longer have a reference to a data source.

Darned if I know how that pesky 'd' got in there. It should have been Merge docs (see edited post). Sorry.

Strange, I've never seen that. If the data source is not available when you open a merge document, you usually get a warning. Does the computer on which you have problems also run Word 2002, or another version (and if so, which)?

Yep, 2002. Not sure what SP pac though. (It's in another location). The doc is opened through Access.

What happens if the document is opened manually in Word on the "problem" computer? Does Word recognize it as a merge document?

We used to see this problem with Word 2000, and we finally adopted a strategy of setting the data source in the Automation that drove the merge. Then we elected to save the merge document without any data source and make it read only. However I was under the impression the mail merge rewrite that went into Word 2002 effectively solved those sorts of problems.

I'm sorry, I can't find anything relevant about this for Word 2002.

The merge fields in Word reference the full UNC path of the data source. If this changes you need to re-point to the data source

Gidday fellow Aussie. Every time the doc is opened, we re-point to the data source, only to have it lost next opening.

Re: merge data disconnects (2002 SP3)

I was certain that we had tried opening a merge doc directly (manually), but perhaps not. I visited the site today and when we opened a merge doc directly, not through Access, it opened still linked to its data source. But opening with Access, the link was lost. I tried another computer at that site and had the same results. When opening the docs manually, a dialog comes up asking if it
