    Illegal Operation

It's Monday with a vengeance. One of the computers in my office suddenly refuses to run Excel 2000. Clicking on the icon only displays the "Illegal operation" message. Word works fine. Everything else is ok. And everything worked fine on Friday.
This seems like a Windows 98 problem, but Dell tech support is advising me to format the HD and start over. There's gotta be a better way.
I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling Office 2000 with no effect. Also tried reinstalling an older version of the registry. What's broke? <img src=/S/scream.gif border=0 alt=scream width=15 height=15>

    Re: Illegal Operation

    Ricky -
Thanks for the response. I dug back and found your original post. It looked exactly like mine. Got hold of the eraser program and tried the advice from cri. Unfortunately, my problem must be unrelated because it had no effect. I still get the "illegal operation" message.
I'm reluctant to format the HD because:
    1. Reformat seems to be Dell's answer to everything.
    2. I'm way too lazy to reformat.
Kind of looks like the options are getting slimmer, tho.
    Thanks,
    Keith

    Re: Illegal Operation

One thing you might try is to remove everything from your XLStart directory. Also see if you have an "Alternate startup directory" and if you do remove everything from there. If Excel will start with those directories empty, then something in one of those files is corrupted.

    Re: Illegal Operation

There are truly some good tech support people around. The problem is, it's incredibly hard to get to them. Most of the time you get someone that's good at answering the phone and little else. Rebooting and reformatting are all they know. I wouldn't reformat my hard disk, either.

There is a solution to the problem. I had to totally erase Excel from my system and I do mean TOTALLY (Registry entries and all) and then reinstalled Excel. And that worked. I wish I had more... Good luck.

    Re: Illegal Operation

BTW - I can't prove it but I'm almost certain that my problem was created from third party add-in programs that I kept piling on. Don't know if this would apply to you but if so, you should probably limit yourself to one or two with features you like and stay away from the rest.

    Re: Illegal Operation

Problem solved! Thanks to both of you for your help. Legare - I checked the alternate startup directory(windowsapplication datamicrosoftexcel) and deleted the file that was there (excel.xlb). That did the trick.
    Thanks again.

Flip back through the Excel pages in this forum. All the way to April 18th, 2001 and look for the thread subject "Crisis". I had a similar problem with Excel, follwed the advice I was given and was up and running in no time. Hope this helps you. Ricky
