Not a header or a footer, but a 'sider' (2003)

Is there a way to create a graphic on the right side margin of odd pages and left side of even pages? We are attempting to make "tabs" by putting blackend text boxes on the outside margin so that when someone looks at the manual from the side, they can see where one report stops and the next begins. The pages are printed two-sided which is why I need them to alternate sides.

I know that headers and footers can alternate odd and even. Is there a way to convince Word that my header should be printed on the side of the page?

You can place a floating text box or picture in the header; since it's floating it can be anywhere on the page. You can place one in the odd page header, and another one in the even page header. See attached example.

Note: most printers can't print right up to the edge of the paper.

This solution works just fine, even though it isn't right to the edge of the paper.

Thanks, Hans. My boss thinks I'm brilliant!
