    ISASS.exe problem (Window XP)

    Hello,

I think I have an ISASS.exe problem. In all the solutions I find on the net, people presume that you are still able to start your PC and end up on the desktop. My problem is that I can't even get that far anymore (I am now working on a different PC).

Here's what happens, I turn on my PC (power), Windows is trying to start up (I get the Windows XP pro sign with the cyclops horizontal bar going from left to right), than a black screen, and after a while a little window titled "ISASS.exe system error", message "object not found". The only thing I can do is accept (click on 'ok' or on the cross to shut down) and than the system starts all over again. Point is: I am completely unable to even end up in my PC. HELP ! Anybody can tell me what to do?

Hiya, frmo what I can tell isass.exe is a backdoor trojan hors - nasty. Just looking at it on Symantec website - removal needs entrance to windows!

Can you get into windows in safe mode (press F8 after the initial BIOS screen, before windows 'cyclops' screen. Choose safe mode.

If you can, removal instructions are posted here
    Thanks,

Unfortunately I tried getting on to safe mode. Same result. I talked with an IT guy from work and he told me I need to reinstall windows. ouch. Inorder to save the data on my hard drive I have to install a new hard drive. Install windows then use the old drive as a slave. Sounds like a lot of fun.

    Man, that's not good!

I dunno if it would be easy for yo to try it, but if you could get your hard drive out ad hook it into another PC as a slave, then run antivirus / spybot etc from the clean PC on the infected drive. This runs the risk of infecting the good PC i guess, but I would try it - carefully. Just a thought. I did this before on a friends infected hard drive and it worked. But if windows has had it it might be time for a reinstall. JOY.
    Thanks,

If you can't boot to safe mode, what about a repair installation of Windows? This should <img src=/S/please.gif border=0 alt=please width=31 height=23> at least allow you to then boot to safe mode and enable you to try some of the other suggestions offered.

If you want to take the time and really don't want to reinstall Windows, look at Bart's Preinstalled Environment (BartPE) bootable live windows CD/DVD. You may be able to access your system and follow the removal instructions to the point of getting rid of the offending EXE or DLL. You might then be able to boot and complete the removal.
