Windows Update Not Working (Win XP Home - SP1)

This is the first time I used Windows Update since the repair of Windows XP. It worked before. now it stops at the site that reads:

Checking if your computer has the latest version of Windows updating software for use with the website.

I've searched the KB, changed ActiveX settings, enable Java Script all to no avail. If it can't be fixed, I understand that I can get the hotfixes from some where else, but where?

When you are at the "Windows Update" site and have tried checking for updates, is there a additional bar below the normal tool bars? If so, right click and and allow update to be installed.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

    Hi Dave,
There's no toolbar, in fact no bar at all. Underneath the message I see : The website uses AciveX controls to determine which version of the software your computer is running. If you see an ActiveX warning, make sure the control is digitally signed by Microsoft before installing it or allowing it to run.

That's it, no activity at all, it just sits and goes nowhere fast.. I received no ActiveX warning or error messages of any kind. I don't get far enough to see the checking for updates message that I'm used to seeing.

Try going to Microsoft Update. That should try to update you to the most current version (V6 ).

Hi Dave, I hope you have a prosperous week-end.

It was included in the checking if your computer .......... message. It was the last paragraph. This is what it is said: This website uses ActiveX controls to determine which version of the software your computer's running.

Through Google I found two articles on disabling and turning it off. I figured I would do the reverse and turn ActiveX on. Why does Windows use it when every pne else is advising that it be turned off or disabled?

I found the articles on r937.com and computerbytesman.com. Oh yes, I also found one on Experts Exchange Forum.

That's were I was and here's the URL.
    http://update.microsoft.com/windowsupdate/...ault.aspx?In=en.

The complete words I saw are:

The website uses ActiveX controls to determine which version of the software your computers running. If you see an ActiveX warning make sure the control is digitally signed by Microsoft before installing or allowing it to run.

You should see a bar similar to the attachment. Click it and allow the install to be run.

No Dave, I'm sorry to say but there is no gold bar, no nothing but what I previously said. If I had seen something like that I surely would have clicked on it.
I'm haviing a problem trying to figure out how to get the AciveX it says is required.

Have a look at Tools > Options > Internet Security > Custom and check the setting for "Download signed ActiveX controls"

It might also be worth adding WindowsUpdate to Internet Explorer's "Trusted sites".

    Hi Duchess,

After you have made sure you have Active X installed ( use the Sun Micro version as pointed out in another post ), you can go to a MS direct link to install the new version of update.

    Go to UPDATE

Edited to add: link to Sun Micro Java site. SUNJAVA

IIRC, I had to wait for what I thought was a looong time for the system to figure out it needed an update and then even longer to download and install the update. You may also want to look at the Troubleshooting section in theMicrosoft Update FAQ.

Do you think overnite was long enough for it to figure out if I needed an update? A Microsoft tech worked for over 3 hours trying to find a solution and finally gave up, promising to kick the problem upstairs. He wasn't half as tired as I was when he quit.

Thanks for the FAQ tip, but there was nothing there I could use.

    <P ID="edit" class=small>(Edited by Leif on 12-Jul-05 07:11. to remove incorrect URL to off-site image.)</P>Hi Bob,

I think I love you. If I wasn't already married, I'd ask for your hand.

The update site you sent me too, did the trick. Windows Update's now running like a well oiled machine. And to think, not even Microsoft tech's knew of the new page and that I needed an updated windows installer. If I was in charge of this place, I would promote you to the highest level available. You are a 6 star general in my estimation and I thank you so very, very much. I also thank every one who tried to assist me.

Consider this thread solved and closed.
