Instant Message Logon Dialog Box (Windows Messenger 5.1)

Sorry if this is the wrong forum, but I'm hopeful one of you experts will know the answer.

I use Windows Messenger 5.1 with our Exchange server to IM people within our company. Sometimes I go to sign in and get a dialog box with just one box for my e-mail address. However, other times I get a dialog box with for boxes, which are something like E-mail address, User ID, Password, and Domain. It is totally random which box comes up. The only exception is that when the VPN is off, if I try to sign in the box comes up. Of course, that does me know good since I am not connected with the Exchange server unless I'm connected through VPN.

If the dialog box comes up with the 4 data entry boxes, I can connect. However, if the box comes up just asking for my e-mail address, I cannot connect.

The experts at my company say it will require a VPN server upgrades, exchange server upgrades, other software upgrades, etc., so they say it is not worth it to fix, especially since it only happens over VPN.

I can't help but believe there is a better way of forcing this particular dialog box to come up. Anyone got any ideas?

    Thanks!!

Sorry to seem obtuse, but does this mean the 1-line or the 4-line dialog box?

It sounds as if this may be some sort of Active Directory issue. Do you know which versions of Exchange Server and Windows Server(s) your company is running?

The exception I referred to was when I was NOT connected to VPN, and tried to sign on (or it came up automatically and asked me to sign on), it then gave the 4 box sign in.

I'm not sure what version of Exchange Server and Windows Server they are running, but could try to find out. Does that really control (at least randomly), which dialog box comes up?

Thank you. I now understand - as it is.

Broadly, what you are trying to do will probably work problem-free on a "pure" Exchange Server 2003/Windows Server 2003 setup. It sounds, however, as if that is not what you have running. The "crap shoot" may be a function of the redundancy supporting your log-on path to Exchange Server. If so, there may conceivably be a way to "force" the right path. Personally, I do not know what could be required.

In the old days of Windows 2000 (haven't noticed recently), you had to tick a checkbox when you created a VPN connection to let you put in the domain. Without the domain, it was difficult to login, so why this wasn't the default was a real mystery (and headache to users and IT). Does Windows messenger's sign-on have any configuration options to force the complete dialog to be displayed every time?

Well, that is MY question. I have looked through all the options and can see nothing that causes the more complete box to appear.

I'm guessing if there was anything obvious, our tech guys would have found it. I'm hoping something is less obvious that exists, some config file or registry hack that can cause this.

Thus, my questioning the geniuses that inhabit this lounge.

While I'm often willing to fire up various programs to try to help, it was so hard suppressing the Messenger that I think in this case I will have to leave the exploring to others. Good luck in your quest.
