TOC (or document) corrupt? (XP (2002) + SP3)

I have a long (300 pages) document which was initially formatted w/o styles, but afterwards I defined header styles
with numbering and then a TOC to collect the headers.

I did many changes in the header stiles and I also have eliminated the
    first level from TOC.

    I have now two problems:

    - the "right align page numbers" is now grayed out and the page
numbers are not aligned to the right.

    - if I change the font in the header styles TOC2 - TOC7 (not using
TOC1 any more), it has an effect on the font of the page number, but
    not of the header text.

In a small test document with the original predefined headings
    everything works OK.

I have cleaned my long document from normal text - it is now just with
the headers and TOC, and much smaller, and the problem persists.

How can I restore the normal behaviour?

I would very much appreciate any help.

    TIA

    Alex

    Welcome to Woody's Lounge!

Try copying the entire document without the final paragraph mark into a blank new document.

Re: TOC (or document) corrupt? (XP (2002) + SP3)

    Thank you Hans

I've copied everything without the final paragraph mark, and the behaviour remaind the same: when I edit the TOC field, in the "Table of Content" | "Print preview" windows, the headers appear without the page numbers being right-aligned, the "right align page numbers" is grayed. When I change the font of a header, it affects the page number only, and the page numbers in the document's TOC are not right-aligned any more (they were before the change).

I have even saved the document as "Web page" and back , then recreated the TOC - same result.

    What else should I check?

    Thanks again.

Sorry, in fact there is a change: I can now change the header font.

However, the page numbers are not right-aligned and the corresponding option is still grayed.

    TIA

<P ID="edit" class=small>(Edited by jscher2000 on 12-Jul-05 13:14. )</P>If you click in the TOC and press Shift+F9, what appears inside the field code braces for the problem TOC?

Sorry: I forgot about the HYPERLINK fields. Easier to use Alt+F9 to toggle the entire TOC (and all other fields in your document) to a field code, and then Alt+F9 to toggle it back.

Re: TOC (or document) corrupt? (XP (2002) + SP3)

The TOC field is now, after recreating it following the HTM conversion:

    { TOC o "2-7" f p " " u }

In the original document (before conversion to HTM) it was

    { TOC o "2-7" f h z u }

    Thank you

Re: TOC (or document) corrupt? (XP (2002) + SP3)

If you search for field code TOC in help, it says that this --

    p " "

-- indicates the separator between the TOC entry and the page number. In this case, just a space. If you delete that in its entirety, the TOC should revert to its default, which is a tab. Does that help?

I'm not sure whether you mean to have the f switch in there, which picks up manually applied TC fields in addition to headings level 2-7. If you don't need it, perhaps best to take it out.

Re: TOC (or document) corrupt? (XP (2002) + SP3)

YES !!!, removing the /p " " code solved the problems; it means that I have to remove it every time I refresh the TOC, as the option "right align page numbers" is always grayed.

In fact, the conversion to HTM and back to DOC wasn't necessary.

As to the f code, I do need it to add some lines in the middle of the TOC.

I have another, smaller, TOC problem, but I'll open a new thread.

Thank you very, very much !!

At least you have a workaround. Sometimes that all we can do until grayed out options mysteriously become available again. <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15> I believe the help mentioned something about web view having fewer options. If you've tried Normal and Print Layout views, then I guess we'll just have to leave the mystery unsolved for now.
