install xp to a Linsprie pc (windows xp)

I bought a pc from fry's for $149.99 (AMD sempron 2200+, 128 ram 40G HD,) with Linspire 4.5. Not happy with Linsprie. Is it possible to delete the Linspire and install the windows xp? I am afraid the Bios will prevent me to install the xp. I heard somebody said he deleted the partition and formatted the hard drive, but still can not run the xp.
thanks for any help.

Windows XP Professional System Requirements

Requirements for Windows XP Home are almost identical.

The most important (for you) part: "AMD K6/Athlon/Duron family" - that means Windows has no driver for AMD Sempron. Download, unzip and burn to CD the driver from http://www.amd.com/us-en/Processors/Techni...1_11687,00.html along with drivers for each other piece of equipment in your PC (motherboard, video card or video adapter if it is integrated with motherboard, audio card, NIC, etc). Drivers are usualy on hardware's maker webpage.
Hard drives and CD/DVD ROM or RW drives usually not require separate drivers, but their controllers (ATA, IDE, SCSI, SATA) sometimes do. You can find such drivers (if you need them) on your motherboard's website (except SCSI - see SCSI card maker's webpage). Only after you collected and prepared (unzipped or expanded) all drivers - make sure you can see .INF file for each driver, not just single .EXE file, on your CD - you can start Windows installation.

BIOS cannot prevent you from Windows installation except when a computer was designed to run PC-incompatable OS (for example, MacOS). Since your computer runs Linspire (Linux), it can run Windows.

You can also check if your computer is on Microsoft Windows XP Tested Products list:

Thank you Kaplinb, I will give it a try later. I need to identify all my hardwares and collect all the drivers.
one question thought, during the windows xp installation, will it ask for the drivers or I will add them after the installation?

Note that the memory requirements Microsoft specify are woefully inadequate. You'll need at least 256MB to run adequately with just one or two programs running. You should consider 512MB (or more) if you now do or expect to do much with graphics or have several programs running at once.

Hi Joe

Most drivers should install okay straight from the XP disk during installation. If not, then you should be able to download the remaining ones once the installation is complete.

No, Linux drivers won't work with XP. Like I said, the vast majority of common hardware drivers are alraedy on the XP cd, so you shouldn't have any problems.

Joe,

Windows Setup asks for drivers that are not on Installation CD on the first boot, often even before Windows fully started. On the dialog there is an option to "search for a driver" and you can point it to CD, but the search isn't deep enough (if your driver is in subfolder of the folder, it couldn't find it). You must go to the next couple of steps until you see "Have disk" button and click it.

Lyra,

Unfortunately, you are not right. If Windows has no appropriate drivers neither for NIC nor for modem, how can you possibly download the driver? (I saw such situation couple of times).

"common hardware drivers " should read "common hardware generic drivers".

After the install of Windows, one should go to the OEM of most of the hardware and get current drivers from them.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

Fair enough, but in my own experience most NICs and modems seem to be supported. You make a very fair point though, so I stand corrected.
