    Automatic Redirection

    Hi,

I just setup a new Web site, www.jonathanrick.com, and want to redirect visitors to my old site to my new one.

As such, I want to delete everything at the old site except the home page.

Of course, this means that when someone tries to visit, say, http://students.hamilton.edu/2005/jrick/thesis2.htm, they'll get an error: "The page cannot be found."

But there's a solution, which I've seen other sites use: when a user tries to bring up a nonexistant page (like thesis2.htm), instead of getting an error message, they'll be automatically redirected to http://students.hamilton.edu/2005/jrick/.

Any ideas how I do this? Many thanks.

Try the refresh meta tag explained nicely here.

    Re: Automatic Redirection

The person operating the server can customize the 404 (page not found) behavior for your folder(s). However, as the end-user, you might not be able to do this. Instead, you might need to tediously replace every page with a new (but very short) page that redirects to the new address. If the page locations follow the same structure, you can use a little JavaScript to make it very smooth, or the more traditional META REFRESH.
