    Protection on a hyperlink?? (Word 2002)

    Hi,

    I have a document that has hyperlinks to pictures of bmp format! Some of the pictures are confidential in nature. Is there a way to create a hyperlink that will prompt for a password before it navigates to the graphic program to display the graphic?
    On the other hand...if the hyperlink can't be modified to do this...which graphic programs allow pictures to have password protection?

    TIA
    Regards,
    Rudi

    Hi Rudi

    How about a little bit of innovation and it is free. Why don't you have hyperlinks to zip files and password the zip files that contain the bitmaps <img src=/S/wink.gif border=0 alt=wink width=15 height=15>

    No...

    I need the picture to display without the need for a person to have to unzip the piture first! I thought of putting the picture in a blank Word doc and password protecting that! But using this approach needs me to insert the picture in the doc. I have a range of pictures as bmp and jpeg format files. I want to hperlink directly to the file...some picture files are confidential though! But the most ideal scenario would be to have the picture open in a graphic window based on the picture type... bmp in paint, jpeg in microsoft photo editor....etc!

    Rudi

    I'm afraid that your requirements look contradictory to me. Please remember that most graphics programs can open many file types. So even if you found a graphics app that asked for a password, the user could use another app to view the file. You'll have to put the image files in a protected container, such as a password-protected zip file, as suggested by Jerry.

    Hi Rudi

    To clarify and to give me better understanding:

    1) Is this a solution that can be put on a network or will it be a standalone application

    The reason I ask because you could put the private pictures in a folder with specific permissions for a particular user.

    Where is this to be used? On a network? If so, you could set permissions on the files and/or on the folders containing them.

    Your usual clear focus in analysing the problem comes to the fore again Hans...
    Jerry thax for your suggestions too.

    I know it is a weird request...but this is outside the scope of a server etc...

    If i have a word doc that must be emailed to a client...the doc will contain pictures...some of confidential nature that must only be viewed by password. I will provide clients (external from my company) with the password if they need to see the pics. I was hoping to get a hyperlink to access a file only by password! I was hoping also to avoid the zip route!! Hans .... you clarified my train of thought and I guess my request was rather weak! I will look into the protected folder route too...I must just search for some utility to pass protect folders! I'll see if this will work better!

    Tx

    Rudi

    You cannot e-mail a protected folder.

    Hi Rudi

    Just an idea I had. I know you are pretty hot in Excel and the VBA. Have you thought about using Excel to do this job for you?

    You can embed the images in a work sheet and then lock down that sheet and hide it. On the front a simple command button that opens a dialogue for a request for a password and if they get it correct opens that sheet for them to view the images.

    I have seen a very clever excel workbook example recently on the excel board that the images become visible when a combo is selected. I have searched tonight but can't find it but I know I have a copy at work. Do you think this could be a viable alternative?

    Jerry,
    Thanx for your interest in my query!!
    It would certainly be a viable solution if it were my file, but I am bound to word for this one! I'm needing words functionaity to control the document!
    Tx for the suggestion pal!

    Rudi

    Re: Protection on a hyperlink?? (Word 2002)

    Right

    Not to be beaten by this.

    I have written the script but you may want to investigate this option.

    The code is

    <div style="width: 100%; background-color: #FFFFFF;">Sub Rudi()

    Dim Message, Title, MyPassword
    Message = "Enter password" '
    Title = "Jezza Demo"

    MyPassword = InputBox(Message, Title)

    If MyPassword = "Rudi" Then

    Selection.WholeStory
    With Selection.Font

    .Hidden = True

    End With

    Else
    End If
    End Sub</div hiblock>

    Doc Attached password is Rudi

    Re: Protection on a hyperlink?? (Word 2002)

    Jerry,

    Not to be beaten by you, I simply disabled macros when opening the document, so I wasn't prompted for the password and the text was visible. You could, of course, make the text hidden before saving the document, and unhide it if the correct password is provided. If the user disables macros, the text remains hidden. But (s)he could still unhide it manually. If you protect the document for forms (with a password), hyperlinks don't work. <img src=/S/shrug.gif border=0 alt=shrug width=39 height=15>

    Re: Protection on a hyperlink?? (Word 2002)

    Hi hans

    Good point, it was more a demonstration to show how hide the table of hyperlinks.

    Yes hide the table before saving and change the code to:

    <div style="width: 100%; background-color: #FFFFFF;">Sub Rudi()

    Dim Message, Title, MyPassword
    Message = "Enter password" '
    Title = "Jezza Demo"

    MyPassword = InputBox(Message, Title)

    If MyPassword = "Rudi" Then

    Selection.WholeStory
    With Selection.Font

    .Hidden = False

    End With

    Else
    End If
    End Sub</div hiblock>

    I see your point about the manual overide though...I sahll run off and investigate that.

    Is there a way that Rudi could disable or hide that menu option? Just an idea

    Re: Protection on a hyperlink?? (Word 2002)

    I'm afraid all this won't work.

    1) The user can display hidden text in the View tab of Tools | Options...

    2) Even if you disable menu items and protect the VBA code with a password, the user can still run code from the Immediate window, or from a module in another document.
