    Server Application Error - IIS

    IIS 5.0, Win 2K Pro...
This is a VERY FRUSTRATING problem. Our shop had some kind of terrible virus and, after shutting down all the pooters for most of the day, we can now work again. Unfortunately, I cannot get IIS on my local server to function properly. The first thing it started to do was require logging in to any and all webpages; now some (important) pages won't show no matter what: I get 'Server Application Error' and am advised to inspect the event log. WHERE IS THAT? I can find a logging file in the System32 folder but it's completely useless. I seem to recall something called 'webcerr.txt' or something like that but my searches have been bootless.

Please help if you can! I am tempted to pull hair at this point... Also if you have a clue as to why IIS won't allow anonymous login (I checked NTFS permissions and gave 'Everyone' full access, but nothing doing...)

    TIA

Google for "system event log windows 2000" - this is the first result.

Also, check in the IIS Properties for the affected website. Make sure the Anonymous Access checkbox is selected (Directory Security tab - Edit button).

oh yeah the system event log. forgot about that! the IIS logfile is wecerr.txt and wasn't helpful. the system event log says the ISUR profile is locked, which makes sense and one of the effects of the virus yesterday was the locking of accounts. now to figure out how to unlock it...

also, I have tried numerous settings in IIS and NTFS and the anonymous login option was, and remains, checked.

    Thanks for the reply!

If "locked" means "disabled," that could explain everything. The account can be unlocked from AD or User Manager.

Do you realize that if you don't know the exact method of infection, you really don't have any idea if you've really cleaned up your computers.

Take off, nuke it from orbit. It's the only way to be sure (that is, reformat your computer and reinstall before you connect to a network again).
