    Excel neglecting shortcuts (2003)

Since two days now I have a problem. When Excel is not yet started, doubeclicking shortcuts to xls files starts excel, but does not open the files any more.
I get an error that windows cannot find the file to which the shortcut points.
If Excel is running, however, doubleclicking shortcuts works.

    Try the following:
    - Start Excel.
    - Select Tools | Options...
    - Activate the General tab.
    - Make sure that the check box 'Ignore other applications' is clear.
    - Click OK.
    - Quit Excel and try to open a workbook from a shortcut.
Post back if it doesn't work.

    Re: Excel neglecting shortcuts (2003)

The check box is clear. And I get the error message:
    Windows cannot find file 'xxxxx.xls'
    but the file exists.
In fact, Word shows the same behavior.

It's strange that both Word and Excel show this behavior.

For Excel: try Jan Karel Pieterse's <!post=Systematic Approach to Behavioral Problems in XL,290455>Systematic Approach to Behavioral Problems in XL<!/post>
For Word: try Phil Rabichow's <!post=Systematic Approach to Behavioral Problems in Word (97/2000),197827>Systematic Approach to Behavioral Problems in Word (97/2000)<!/post> (it is valid for Word 2003 too)

    Hi Erich,

Have you tried recreating the shortcut? Maybe its just the target of the shortcut that is errored!! Delete the current shortcut and use Windows Explorer to recreate the shortcut. Does this help?

    This does not help 8-(
In fact, I suspect it is a general problem with DDE and so I will bite the bullet and reinstall Windows and Office from scratch.

Wow...that is drastic measures....I'm assuming that Hans's advice and links also did not solve your question?
It would be useful to know what actually did go wrong!!!

    Re: Excel neglecting shortcuts (2003)

I tried all suggestions, and nothing helped. It really seems that something in Windows is going wrong,
not just in Office. As I said, doubleclicking any office file (files, not juwt shortcuts) will not open
the file if the application is not started already. That is true for Word, Excel, and Access. I did not test the others.
And my Windows installation needs an overhaul anyhow. The shortcut problem seems only to be a consequence of
    this more fundamental problem.

    Re: Excel neglecting shortcuts (2003)

I had an old registry dump (I am theroetically using WinRescue, but clearly not often enough), and after restoring the old registry things worked again. So something went wrong there.
I had done an Office repair, however, and that had not solved the problem. So ther problem definitely was in the inner workings of Windows.

    Re: Excel neglecting shortcuts (2003)

It happened once more. So I investigated further, and i found a (partial?) solution.
Word and Excel open files (on doubleclick) with DDE. The file association dialog
in Windows Explorer -> Folder Options -> FIle types
select XLS and then click Advanced.
For the Open item uncheck the Use DDE box.
    Then, things work again.
Microsoft in recent publications generally recommends against using DDE,
but the standard Word and Excel configuration use DDE for opening with
    doublelicking.
Access and Powerpoint do not use DDE, and they did not cause any problems on my machine.
Things only seemed to go wrong after i installed a few user interface languages and
    the corresponding Office 2003 servicapacks.
