    formating previous paragraph (Office 2003)

For some reason when I choose all of a paragraph and do Cntl^B to make it bold, in SOME documents it also makes the rest of the document bold that wasn't selected. I haven't been able to figure out what's going on. Also, it doesn't happen if I just choose part of the paragraph, but only when I choose all of the paragraph.

Activate the Styles and Formatting task pane.
Click in the paragraph you're having problems with.
Right-click the style at the top of the task pane and select Modify...
Clear the "Automatically update" check box, then click OK.
If necessary, repeat for other styles.
