    Corrupted workbook (2002, XP Pro)

    Hi all,

I was playing around creating a workbook to help me solve Sudoku puzzles.
I have completed about 2/3 of it when I saves the workbook and received an ambiguous name message.
    The workbook is now corrupted.

To save time I would like to revive the macros I have written, the worksheets are not essential, however the document repair just drops all the code I have written.

Opening the file as text does not show the code in any usable format.
Is there any other method I can use to recover the code?

    TIA

The most immediate answer is that 2 (or more) of your macros have the same name. Thats what causes the ambiguous name error!
Can you not open the workbook at all???

    Also see if you can't pull some info to help you from the replies of these posts: <post#=290455>post 290455</post#>, <post#=459,853>post 459,853</post: >, <post#=400,634>post 400,634</post: >, <post#=419,775>post 419,775</post: >, <post#=411,735>post 411,735</post: >

If you start Excel, and then do a File/Open and navigate to the file in the File Open dialog box, select the file, and then hold down the shift key when you press the Open button, does the file open?

You could send the file to me if you like and I will try to recover the VBA.

    Legare,

I tried that before I posted. The WB opens, but is 'cleaned' and the VBA isdeleted.

    Thanks

    Rudi,

I suspect you are right and I copied a subroutine and did not rename it before saving.
I looked at all the links you suggest, but they could not help.

It looks like I will have to reenter the code by hand. Lucky for me it is just a personal diversion and not of critical importance.

    Thansk for your help.

    Jan Karel Pieterse,

Thanks for the offer, but you probably are too busy helping others withe real problems.
As it is not more than a few pages of code I will recreate it.

    Thanks again

I must just add that there must be something else that is the root cause of your problem. I can recall a couple of occations where a workbook have an ambiguous name. The workbook still opened and allowed me to change the name to something else!!!

    Weird case you have!

    Fine with me.

You could try openoffice to open the file, it also reads the VBA.

    Kieran,
Did you ever get your dudoku solver running? I am looking for one that will allow me to use letters as well as numbers, and allow the possibilities to show up in the empty cells as well. Any help?
    Thanks,
    Jeff

    Jeff,

It took a while, but here is the result.
It 'should' be possible to amend the utility to use letters & numbers, however as the display interface has one button for each possible option, the screen size may be too large.

I have not added any instructions to the interface, most buttons have help text; generally the mouse is "left click do/right click undo".
Try loading one of the saved games, then select solve mode to see how it works.

    Hans,

I know it has been asked before, but do you ever sleep?
