    Hi all,

    Is it possible to create this formula without using VBA?

    Is the number format of the cell set to Text? If so, any formula you enter in the cell is seen as literal text.

    Excel has a worksheet function INDIRECT that can be used to create variable references. It will only work with external references if the workbook referred to is open, so you don't specify the path, only the filename. If you create the following text in cell B1, whether as literal text or as the result of a formula

    <code>'[Filename.xls]Sheetname'!A1</code>

    (note that this is a bit different from your version) you can use this formula to retrieve the value of the cell:

    <code>=INDIRECT(B1)</code>

    Laurent Longre has an excellent free add-in MoreFunc, available from Excel add-ins. It contains a function INDIRECT.EXT that will work with references to a closed workbook.
