File that won't open (2000(9.0 6926 SP-3))

We have a file which when we attempt to open it we get the attached message. This happens irrespective of whether we attempt to open it by:

pulling down File | Open  in Word;

double clicking on the file icon; or

dragging the icon from its folder into the Word application[/list] The problem is NOT machine specific.

Any help or history on this problem will be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks John.
Unfortunately, that doesn't seem to apply in this case. If and when we resolve this I will post the solution. In the meantime, I'm still looking for input.

    Thanks again John
I'm still looking for input. The problem shows up with this document on a host of machines, and the machines have no problem with documents that contain spaces in their name.

Perhaps the document is corrupted. You can try to open it in Wordpad, or to open it in Word by selecting "Recover text from any file" in the Files of Type dropdown in the Open dialog. (Don't forget to reset it to "All Word documents" next time)

    Thanks Hans
I was able to open the file in a text editor (NoteTab), but the same error message was displayed when I tried to open it with the "Recover text from any file" feature of Word.

    Mysteriouser and mysteriouser.

Can you salvage some or all of the contents from NoteTab?

Yes; it appears that most, if not all of the text is available through NoteTab.
Thanks for your interest and support.

Hi, Just curious if you ever figured out what was at the bottom of this issue because I have encountered similar issue but it is always when the file has been received via e-mail and kind of figured it was due to 'cached' memory. thanks. Paddy

    Hello Paddy
In the instance at hand, I don't believe that e-mail was involved when the problem first appeared. Though I will check and advise. We quit attempting to open it after finding a day old version and capturing the text through NoteTab.
I'm interested in your theory of cached memory, and how it might contribute to the problem. I can barely spell Cached memory.

Have you attempted to open the file in a previous version of excel? Specifically Excel97?
I had a similar problem when I first moved from 97 to 2000 and found that 97 would give sheet names in the properties that was unreadable in 2000. When I shortened these names to a more managable length, I was able to open the sheet in 2000.

Do you have access to a higher version of Word - 2002/2003. I recover many documents this way ... unbelievable how many do actually go corrupt. Try "open and repair" just in case it does the job. Couple of other things: If you have a document mgmt system and your MRU list is enabled you might want to disable the MRU list in your normal.dot before trying to open and also clear out tmp files. Was this document created via merge database? If so see article above referenced by Rebel. Cheers,
