    normal.dot as add-in (2000 on Win 98)

I am getting an annoying message that says "The global template, normal.dot, is already open as an add-in program" every time I start Word.

I tried to eliminate it as an add-in using Tools Addins but couldn't.

How can I fix this? Thx!

Check whether you have a duplicate copy in Word's Startup folder (path listed under Tools>Options..., Folder Locations). By duplicate copy, I mean usually Normal.dot is in your User Templates folder, and not your Startup folder.

I didn't really understand your post but checked anyway. Oddly - all (ALL) file locations are set to C: -- yes the root. I never do that - I always set the locations to be on drive E: (where I load programs) and use a special templates subdir.

But there is only a single copy of normal.dot there. Since there are no File Locations pointers elsewhere I'm not sure what is up.

    So, ...

I would start by setting reasonable paths again in the File Locations tab. Make sure that the Startup path doesn't coincide with any of the other paths.
