Re: ZoneAlarm 6.0 update

Joe, I'm confused by this. My ZA Pro says I'm up to date, but it is 5.5.094. The ZoneLabs site is touting the suite update, but I don't find anything to say what the version of the individual apps is.

Well, it allowed me to download the update since I has purchased the extended download, but I still don't understand why I didn't receive notification of this.

Re: ZoneAlarm 6.0 update

Ugh! It is paranoid about everything, including the normal apps, antivirus and antispyware apps, AND ITSELF!! I'm sure once I get used to it, I'll appreciate its capabilities, but right now, I'm cursing every time it alerts me to "dangerous" behavior like opening Outlook! . It apparently "learns" as you go along and tell it what to allow, but it feels like it might be a long learning curve. It reminds me of training an email filter. Not sure I would recommend the upgrade to anyone who was intimidated by this kind of thing.

Apparently, Zone Labs will send out notices to its customers who already own ZAP within two weeks. It's possible to download the new version and just do an upgrade; that worked fine for me.

The "approved applications" list should have been migrated from the earlier version, unless they have changed from "application" control to "component-level" control (like Outpost Firewall Pro). There is a lot more training with that feature turned on.

Re: ZoneAlarm 6.0 update

I expected it to migrate, but it the program settings did not appear to do so, although some of the other settings did. One irritant, is that it tends to identify the temp files used when an installer is being run as spyware!

Joe,

I downloaded and installed the latest ZA from your post. Opted to do an "upgrade install" which I don't usually do.
Lo and behold, it changed ALL OF MY existing entries to BLOCKED ! ( red X's all the way down the list )

I had to go back and allow everything that I knew was OK and delete the rest, so that I can allow or block the unknowns as they come up.

As the late Jimmie Durante used to say: "What a revoltin' development this is"

, I did the same thing. Upgrades in the past have always preserved the settings.

Re: ZoneAlarm 6.0 update

I think most vendors of any security related software are having that software be more restrictive with any release these days. They are assuming that is OK with most people and that folks will just put up with the inconvenience of 'training' a new release.

Re: ZoneAlarm 6.0 update

Well, I pity anyone who isn't savy in this software if they try to actually use their computer after installing this version because EVERYTHING gets shut down, even the on-line "additional information" in the ZA warning screens! I think that is a bit extreme, particularly for a novice user.

Re: ZoneAlarm 6.0 update

Unfortunately, many software vendors find it easier to treat people like idiots and take the heat rather than coming up with a comprehensive set of instructions, help, and migration aids. Some of that I suspect is because many (if not most) of todays users install software and attempt to use it without reading anything.

If a lot of people complain, then it's a bug. If they don't, then it's a feature.

Although, speaking from experience sometime to properly implement a new feature you have to modify (i.e. break) an old one.

Re: ZoneAlarm 6.0 update

Well, I probably made the mistake of not accepting their defaults, since I didn't want to override the settings I already had. Maybe a novice would be perfectly happy with whatever ZA thinks is appropriate. I can't fault them for that, but I think the "advanced" version should have a little more configuration control in the upgrade.
