Input mask in Access table (Win XP Access 2003)

I am trying to understand the use of the ! in an input mask. I want to show the area code in blank if I enter 7 digits, and to show the area code if I enter ten digits. My mask is !(###") "000-0000. If I enter seven digits, I get an error message saying "The value is not appropiate for the mask." What am I doing wrong?

See <post#=431,861>post 431,861</post: >. The ! only specifies that if you enter fewer than 3 characters between the parentheses, they will be right-aligned. If you want to omit the area code, click after the closing parenthesis and enter 7 digits.
