Firefox Cache (Win XP Home - SP1)

Does anyone know if the cache in Firefox can be safely emptied?

Mine are quite heavy, and since it's allowed in IE, I'd like to know if that's an option using Firefox newest version.

The cache can safely be emptied.

    Select Tools>Options...
The option to clear the cache is at the bottom of the Privacy section.

If you want to view the contents of the cache type about:cache in the address bar.

Thank goodness. The cache is mighty heavy. Thank you for the information.

A quicker, easier way might be to download a program such as CleanMOCache from http://www.buttuglysoftware.com/

When Firefox 1.5 is released (Currently scheduled for September) there is a "Sanitize Firefox" option that allows you to clear the cache and other things automatically when you close Firefox.

There will also be a public preview release (aka Firefox 1.4) that is due to be released in August if you want to try out the new version a bit earlier.

(The Deer Park name shown in the screenshot is the codename used for the test/nightly releases of the next version of Firefox, it will revert back to Firefox for the release)

I took a look at it, it uses too much RAM for me. Thanks for the suggestion.

Hi Tony: Firefox 1.4 and 1.5 sounds like a long wait from the version I'm running (1.0.6) But emptying the cache hasn't been done up to now, so a little longer won't hurt..

    Thanks for the tip.

Re: Firefox Cache (Win XP Home - SP1)

My Firefox disk cache is set to 50 MB, and a quick inspection shows that:

most of the files have today's date
none is older than a week
the filenames change significantly each day[/list]On that basis, it would seem to be fairly pointless to empty the disk cache, since tomorrow's work will fill it up again. If you're worried about the amount of disk space used (why?), then you can set the disk cache to a lower maximum value.

John, I did find the article amusing to say the least.. For a better description, I'd say it was down right laughable.

I have the cache in Firefox set to 5000kb. Should I increase or decrease, or perhaps leave well enough alone.

That's a "how long is a piece of string" question!

In part, the answer is probably dependent on how much free disk space you have. I have acres, so my Firefox disk cache is set to 50 MB; yours is 10 times smaller. The disk cache holds web pages which you might wish to return to later, so it will also depend on "today's viewing habits"!

How much is 50 MB using KB? Math wasn't one of my strong suites.

Without meaning to start a technical argument, roughly 1,000 x 50 or 50,000 KB. (The reason for a possible technical argument is that a kilobyte really is 1,024 bytes...)

So, for the computer challanged, you're saying that I should set the cache to 50,000 KB to have the same amount of space as you, correct?

Yes, how did you know? Actually, I think it came set up that way and I just never changed it.
