More than one version of Word on a pc

    Hi -

Tomorrow I will be installing Word on WinXP. I currently use Word97, my office uses Word2002. The guru who will be helping me says it's not advisable to have more than one Word installed 'cause when you click on Word, how will PC know which one you want. I suggested different folders.

I know I've read this question on the Board, and i think I remember that it is OK to have 2 Words installed, but don't know what Search words to use.

Advice or direction to the posts will be most appreciated!

    Many thanks,
    Curious

You can have multiple versions of Office (or parts of Office) on one PC, if you keep to the following rules:

Install the oldest version first, and the newest version last.

Install each version in a different folder. This shoudn't be a problem, for the default location for Office 97 is C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOffice, that for Office XP is C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOffice10.

You can have only one version of Outlook installed.[/list]You can create shortcuts to start Word 97 and Word 2002. If you open a Word document from Windows Explorer, it will use the version you last started.

BTW, if you use Word 2002 at work, why not switch to 2002 entirely?

    Hans -
Thank you so much for your directions!

I'm not switching over entirely because I work with my husband on many projects and he is stubbornly resistant to learning anything new (when it comes to word processing).

Is there any downside to running 2 versions of Word?

    Ta,

    Confusion!

There are several Loungers who have reported using 2 or even 3 versions of Office without problems. Almost everything should work okay. There are some shared utilities (such as the equation editor) that will probably run the most recent version even when using Word 97.

I will throw a monkey into all this. Now that Windows Update is MS Update and will try and update ALL installed MS products. During the testing of MS Update there were many people running more than one version of Office and they were always being asked for their install CD and had to go through ALL of the versions. Some was never able to get the Office products updated.

I hadn't thought of that. How about turning off automatic updates, and only getting notifications of updates, so that the user can decide which ones to update?

Even if you go through the "Office" update from within Word you will have the same problem. You are going to have to do ALL Windows and Office updates one by one from the different KB pages.

One more thing - does the new Microsoft Update include Office 97 at all?

OK, so it would ignore Office 97.

Those rules do not work for all Word versions.

The ONLY way to have more than one version on a PC, AND BE ABLE TO FULLY USE EACH, is to have each in a separate bootable system.

Re: More than one version of Word on a pc

    You are correct Joe.
At this time, it appears that MS Update does NOT offer updates for Office 2000. I currently have 2 systems with versions of Office 97, 2000, XP and 2003 installed (and all functioning without problems ), but MS Update only offers updates for Office 2003 and XP.

    From the MS Update FAQ:
"Which products does Microsoft Update support?
In addition to Windows updates, the Microsoft Update website offers updates for some Microsoft products, including Microsoft Office 2003, Office XP, Microsoft Exchange Server, and Microsoft SQL Server. Typically, only updates for the latest version of each product are offered."
