    MSN virtualearth launched

MSN Virtual Earth has been launched. Should continue to make the previously staid map business interesting as Google & MS 'duke it out'.

Sadly it would seem that it is currently US-only. But the maps are generally the most detailed of any I've seen, bar the special high-resolution Google ones of specific areas...

PS In Wilton, Iowa, it seems that their roads overlay is several yards to the east of the actual roads as shown on the photos. But you can easily see where the Rock Island Line goes east-west across the lower part of the town.

    John,
It does include one of my favorite places, Bermuda.
It does take full magnification to see any locations on the island.

Not part of the continental US, I'm afraid.

Courtesy of the Register the following links are of Apple's Cupertino headquarters.

    Google Maps
As can be seen MSN have wiped Apple Computers off the face of the Earth <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

For a new product, MSN Virtual Earth is using rather old images.

    Tony,

I've seen the comment in a couple places that the Google info is newer than MSN. I've also seen in a couple places where some of the MSN info is newer than Google.

Some of the MSN graphics are of much higher resolution however, I was pleasantly surprised at some of the res. accuracy of remote areas in Utah and Nevada. But navigation tools are crude compared to Google Earth, and the 3D capabilities are absent in MSN.
