Downloading files anomaly (IE 6.0 (XP SP-2))

Typically, when I click on a link to download a file (e.g., ".exe") , IE displays that security notification under the Menubar/Address bar which I have to click and then ok the download. But occasionally, there are times when after clicking on the download link, the expected "sound" plays indicating that you need to click on this security bar but the bar isn't displayed thus there is no way to download the file. I'm wondering,

1) Is this something others experience?
2) Other than using my 3rd-party download manager to download these files, is there a setting in IE and/or XP I can change to prevent this?

Jeff,
I don't think I've ever experienced that happening at all.

Do you think it could be the OE>Security tab setting where it won't allow downloads or opening of a file that MAY be potentially dangerous or a virus? It may just apply to OE and not IE but there are a lot that cross over from one to the other. So it may be worth a look.

Could be your "Pop up Blocker" is working. Try a "Ctrl+Refresh". This will bypass MOST blockers.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

Dave,

I never even thought of the possibility that my Popup Manager might have kicked in. I'll have to look at the little widget to see if is red the next time this happens. I'm not using IE's default popup blocker. And, if the Popup Manager isn't blocking it, I will then check my blocked logs in Outpost Firewall Pro to see if it intervened. Thanks for jolting my brain to begin thinking again!

Is it one particular file type? Have you tried the old reliable of clearing TIF & History?

Joe,

To be honest, I've really never paid any attention to whether or not it was a specific file type, but I suspect it was an ".exe" file. The next time it happens I'll be sure to take notes.
